1. Share a moment in your career that you'll always remember.
BRIAN: We always remember the really great moments or the really difficult moments. The one I always go back to is when my Operations Director, Carl Fletcher, passed away suddenly. It was a Saturday. Carl had already voicetracked his Sunday show. I had to go in after leaving the hospital to be with his family and retrack his show. I think it took me 7 or 8 attempts at that first track and sharing why Carl wasn't on that Sunday.
STEPH: The first time we exceeded the goal for our fall fundraiser and went on to raise more funds for extra signals! So many "God-bump" moments and stories from the hearts of our SHINE Partners!
2. If you weren't working in radio what else do you think you'd do?
BRIAN: Since I am also a professor, I would probably be teaching someone on the planet, maybe South Korea or Africa. I also a real estate junkie, so maybe selling houses.
STEPH: Work at a Children's Hospital in Donor Development.
3. Some great advice you've received is…
BRIAN: At the end of your life you will NEVER say, "I wished I had worked longer hours and given more time to my career over my family."
STEPH: From my dear friend and pastor's wife, "In the tough moments of life is when you cling to God the tightest, so soak in the tight grip of His hand & Presence"
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
BRIAN: I read everything. I'm a true believer in life-long learning. We give our lives to an industry that is constantly changing both in technology and audience. Never stop looking 5 years down the road.
STEPH: "By asking Jesus for humility daily and being a sponge and knowing every day I can be better. Staying in God's word, listening to books & podcasts and wise counsel in my life."
5. What's one thing you wish you'd known about radio when you first started?
BRIAN: That radio is just one delivery platform for a content creator/storyteller. Media is converging in on itself, so learn how to film and edit video, do graphic design, and be a great writer. The more tools in your tool belt, the better you become.
STEPH: Not to wear hats on recording days because my animated responses will always result in the bill of my hat hitting the microphone causing a THUMP … and also, just to converse like I'm talking to my friends.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
BRIAN: I am a huge fan of the late Fred Rogers. I've read numerous biographies on his life, work, and faith. Fred was an ordained minister and figured out how to create media for pre-school children that communicated faith principles in a way that captured the attention of the most ADHD child.
STEPH: My Mom. She loved her people well. Was very thoughtful and generous and drove the mission of life and Jesus into all of us, and by doing that – left an eternal legacy.
7. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
BRIAN: I have no sense of smell. When I was a media missionary in South America, I took an over-the-counter medication that probably was banned in the US. It worked wonderfully on my sinuses, but completely wiped out my sense of smell.
STEPH: I talk TO and FOR my little dog (Dixie Joy) constantly, even when I'm by myself with her, we have conversations. :D
8. What's your favorite room at home and why?
BRIAN: My family room. It's where we gather, play, laugh, watch great movies, and pray.
STEPH: Kitchen/family room. It's where my people hang together.
9. Finish this sentence: My day doesn't start properly until I...
BRIAN: Kiss my wife!
STEPH: Get on my knees and surrender my day to HIM.
10. What do you to unwind and chill?
BRIAN: Garage time! I like to make piles of sawdust. I make things out of pallets – outdoor benches, flower boxes, coffee bars. I also love yard work. I'm not one to sit still, I have to be doing something.
STEPH: Relax with my people, whether it's eating a good meal together, going on an adventure or watching a movie…anything with them is life-giving. Especially when it includes laughter!!!!!
