New York City trio VHS Collection drop a new single "Survive" from their new collection Night Drive via Tiger Tone/Pias by way of The Artist Cooperative. The band worked with producer Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck) in Los Angeles through the pandemic. The single “Survive” was built from an acoustic guitar bit. "I left 10,000 dreams behind/But I keep coming back cause I survive," sings James Bohannon. "At its heart, it's a song about playing the hand you've been dealt despite the challenges," says VHS Collection's Nils Vanderlip. "We hope it gives our fans some small sense of camaraderie or encouragement."
The three friends at the heart of VHS Collection—James Bohannon, Conor Cook, and Nils Vanderlip (multi-instrumentalist and producer)—grew up together in New York City. Revered for their signature alt-rock and electro sound, the band seamlessly fuses analog synths, searing guitar hooks, and anthemic choruses, true to their retro-modern aesthetic. To create their new album Night Drive, VHS Collection partnered with Pias [America], Tiger Tone Records, and producer Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck), working in-person in Los Angeles through the turbulence of the pandemic. The result is the darkened, atmospheric gravity of Night Drive, rippling and pulsing with MS20 and JUNO60 synths.
The band formed in 2015 and has released two EPs, and two full length albums. In 2015, VHS Collection began performing live at friends' parties and around NYC's Lower East Side rock clubs, eventually selling out multiple headline shows at the NYC's Mercury Lounge. The band did not have any music out at this time but had developed a sound at that fuses modern and retro sonics, made use of synthesizers and guitars, and blended electronic and alt-rock aesthetics.
In VHS Collection’s brief career, they have quickly built their live shows, now headlining 2K capacity venues locally, and have previously played at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Governor’s Ball.
