Jane's Addiction
Jan 16, 2012
Jane's Addiction officially arrived as a pop culture force in 1988 with their first proper studio album, Nothing's Shocking. The band created a sound that the world had never heard before. It was as riff heavy as it was sensitive. Farrell lyrically chronicled the stranger side of L.A. life, telling personal tales that'd stick with fans just as much as Navarro's licks did. The characters that populate tracks like debut single "Jane Says," "Ted, Just Admit It..." and "Had a Dad" were just as alive as the music itself. Trademark song "Jane Says" charged up the Alternative chart and the album was certified platinum, also grabbing a Grammy nod in 1989 for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, and audiences everywhere fell under Jane's spell.
For their second studio album, 1990's Ritual de lo Habitual, the album reached 3x-platinum in the U.S with two #1 singles "Stop!" and "Been Caught Stealing," the latter of which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. A gold-selling compilation, Kettle Whistle, hit shelves in 1991. In 2003 Jane's Addiction released Strays, their first new album in 13 years. After debuting at #4 on the Billboard chart, the album quickly reached gold status, and first single "Just Because" was their biggest single to date landing at #1.
From the beginning, Jane's Addiction has thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 sees the band return in support of their acclaimed album The Great Escape Artist (Capitol Records), which features the second single "Underground." Starting February 22, this special run of North American shows, called "Theatre of the Escapists", will bring the band to intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers, frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass, are set to deliver an immersive theatrical experience as only they can.
2011 was a milestone year for Jane's Addiction, marking the release of their first studio album in eight years, the Rich Costey-produced album, The Great Escape Artist. Spin, writing about one of the album's tracks, noted that "frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro both put in stunning performances...it sounds like a band re-vitalized" while USA Today said the album finds "...core members Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins conjuring the feral drive and mystical haze of those early works with a fresh kick to the band's electro-rock meld." The album features "Irresistible Force," the spellbinding Top Ten alternative rock hit. Their new single, "Underground" is currently climbing the alternative and rock radio charts. It features some of Navarro's best guitar work, according to the Wall Street Journal, which took note of the way he "excels with terse fills long before he solos at the song's fade."
