Gotye
Feb 20, 2012
Wouter De Backer, also known professionally by his stage name Gotye, is a Belgian-Australian multi-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. He has released three studio albums. De Backer is also one-third of Melbourne indie-pop band The Basics, who have independently released three studio albums and numerous other titles since 2002.
His latest album, Making Mirrors, is the one that has caught on, giving him a deal with Universal and five ARIA Awards. It is now quickly becoming a worldwide sensation.
The title for Making Mirrors was inspired by an artwork painted by De Backer's father in the 1980s, discovered by De Backer amongst old bills and newspapers in his parents' barn, which was later to also become the album artwork.
"The mirror reflects on artwork and it is all very related to self-reflection and introspection on the album," he said.
In addition to the hit "Somebody That I Used to Know," several other tracks off the album are worth your attention. They include "Eyes Wide Open," "Smoke and Mirrors," "I Feel Better" and the whimsical "State of the Art."
Gotye is currently in Europe and the U.K. for extensive touring, and then will come to North America, including performances at Coachella.
