Jake Bugg
Nov 24, 2013
Jake Bugg doesn't find much interest in the current music scene, he prefers to reach to the past for his inspiration. Born in Nottingham, England. Bugg picked up the guitar at the age of 12, and within a year he was composing his own songs; songs which reflect a keen insight, and are delivered in an honest and bare-bones style.
At age 17, he started getting notice in his native land, which ultimately led to his self-titled debut in 2012. The rest is history as they say - Bugg has become a worldwide sensation.
Now 19, Bugg has just release his sophomore album, Shangri La, recorded in three weeks with Rick Rubin at the producer's Malibu studio of the same name. Bugg's distinctive "retro" style is on full display, but the disc does feature more variety in mood and instrumentation. Rubin assembled a great collection of session regulars to back Bugg including guitarist Matt Sweeney, bassist Jason Lader, and drummers Chad Smith and Pete Thomas.
Having had a rough childhood, several songs reflect the insight that period of his life gave him such as "What Doesn't Kill You," "Slumville Sunrise" and "Messed Up Kids." These are balanced with songs such as "Me And You," "A Song About Love," "Pine Trees" and "Storm Passes Away."
Bugg said, "My first album felt like a list of songs, whereas this one feels like a whole entity with something to say. Or if my first album was the color of grey reality, this one's the color of the sun!"
During this year, Bugg has been on the "The Late Show with David Letterman," "Ellen," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Conan." He was named MTV's "Artist To Watch" for May. Bugg returns to North America in early 2014 for more dates.
