Great Moments In Concert Ownership
Regular readers of this daily tripe (shut-ins, agoraphobes, people who attend lots of "meetings", 3rd shift motel staff and the indigent) will note some recurring themes:
- Disdain for prize wheels
- Knowing when an event will draw TV and creating visuals that will cater to them
- "Semblance of Activity". Having stuff happening so that people who may never have met your station before aren't going to walk by, see no one there and leave with the impression that you have no listeners.
Great example from Gaga in Cleveland. This could be applied to ANY format and ANY artist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C8H763Ugpg Stay through to the end.
Web Contests Vs. Web Games
Great examples of Web Fails:
- The oft-mentioned Hormel promotion where you needed to go to the website and sign up to be a VIP, and then go to the Sunday paper and find a SPECIFIC Hormel Chili coupon, and then listen for the morning show to read your name, and then call in and answer a question about the coupon. In eight markets they got no entries.
- A station that had a trip to Puerto Rico. Great prize. Go to the station website, click on a banner and sign up. 125 entries. By ANYones standards, that's horrible. But that is topped by...
- A station that had a trip to Las Vegas to meet Daughtry, sit in on his soundcheck and bring home an autographed guitar. The fact that this was in Vegas makes this already a "10". But meeting the artist and the guitar thing? They got 64 entries by VIP's clicking and signing up.
What do these have in common. One was too hard. Two were too simple. Somewhere in the middle is where you find the sweet spot.
Contests generally are boring. Games generally are fun. They're fun to watch. Anything could happen. There are losers. It's fluid until the outcome.
Great examples of Web Wins:
- WPGC's contest where they slowly over a few days undigitized a photo and you had to call in and ID who the celeb was.
- Fly 92 in Albany where they played a game of "Clue" on the website and you had to solve the crime to win a house full of furniture.
- Dave's Basement in Minny and the iCarly thing from KOB-FM in Albuquerque that were both versions of "Watch & Win". You needed to watch scenarios of vignettes to know the answer if you got through and could answer a question to win cash or a chance to meet Miranda Cosgrove.
- ANY of the "Post & Vote" things. MILF's in Calgary. Mom's in Boise and Dallas. Babies, well, everywhere. Schools in New York. Hot co-workers in Ottawa and Houston. Boise? Mix 106 got 266,677 page views and 9308 visits the first week. Which, for them, is large.
- The Red/Green Light thing that's been done at a few of the stations.
