The Street Team On Your Website
Wild in Tampa was really the first station that I saw take their street team and elevate them to having a jock-like presence on their station. These were more than jeep drivers; they were individual characters who were almost like recurring guests on a sitcom. And they were prominently featured on the website. Kind of like http://www.wired963.com/content/view/138/163/ or some interns at http://www.kzia.com/ZVOICES/INTERNS/tabid/176/Default.aspx
Interns With Skillz
Part of street school is not just naming the summer hires but also finding out what each brings to the table. Like Gabby at Z-102.9 who could play sax, rap and make videos http://www.youtube.com/user/clarez1029?blend=1&ob=5#p/f/4/MNLzYqL-fUI Go under Favorites to her State Fair Rap. To wind up the summer, Dave Ryan will regularly do an intern talent show. These kids bust their humps (what the Hell does that mean?) all summer and it's a fun way to get them some time in the spotlight.
Best. Summer. Series. Ever.
My definition of a great promotion is that it's so specific to the market and the audience that it would be impossible for someone in another market to "get it". Like Rock 102 in Fargo doing "Pimp Your Duck Blind". Or Q-107.5/Memphis' Rooftop Parties at the Peabody.
Cities 97 in Minneapolis is a phenomenally cool station. They don't try to be; they just are.
Brian Oake does afternoons and for the 7th summer he is doing Oake On The Water. It's simple. What do people who listen to Cities do during the Summer? In the afternoons they'll go to a lake or riverside bar, sit around, listen to the music and enjoy the 22 Days Of Summer in Minnesota.
So that's what Brian does. Takes his show and does it from one of these places. Not a remote. A full show. Yesterday they had Adele do a few songs before going to First Avenue. Live music. Sun. Beer. jetskiing. Volleyball. http://www.cities97.com/pages/oakeonthewater/
Lifestyle? They NAILED it.
Which then begs the question, what is so specific to your market and listeners that if you created something, it would be inexplicable to people 1000 miles away?
