Morning Show Phone Starter Of The Day
I tested it on FB. It killed: ever accidentally click send and blast an email to people who should not have been getting it? It's happened to everyone. Lob it out.
High School Football
It was refreshing that one of the Marketing Directors reached out yesterday for thought starters on high school football and also Halloween. Actual darn proactiveness. Which is not a real word.
O.P.P. Our prep pool. I don't think any station has ever done a weekly board of football matchups. VIP's pick the winners. The weekly person with the best accuracy gets something from the sponsoring client.
Football Patrol Total and complete no brainer. And don't overthink this; the reason to do it is to get the station out in front of thousands of people on a Friday night. Don't ask for permission. There's no reason to ask for permission. You're pulling into the stadium parking lot, getting a few kids on the air and then moving on to the next game. And if you're not doing cut ins, then you may as well not do it at all. I'm a fan of multiple hits, as opposed to setting up and doing the equivalent of a remote. Pick your schools so that over the course of the season you hit them all. And don't forget the outside-the-metro schools. They still get rated/surveyed/diaryed/metered and some of these games are huge community events.
Spodcasting Several stations have done the podcasting bit. You would recruit one of two students from each school to be your Spodcasters (sportscasters who post podcasts). Every Friday night after the game they'd submit a 3-5 minute 'cast with some audio highlights and video too, if possible. Someone from Promotions would review for content and then post. 20, 50, 100 new podcasts up every Saturday. All while teaching the kids new ways to use radio.
Team Of The Week Done at HYT in Detroit during the Rick Gillette Era. They started in Fall with football but kept it going all year. It was really just an excuse to market to all of the important schools in the region. Every Thursday night a different team would be in-studio. Once they got past football, they mixed it up with Track, Girls Swimming, Basketball, whatever. When you do this, you reach about 90% of the ears in he school. They're ALL listening. That is if you give them at least a week's notice and support it with morning announcements by the Night show and other chatter.
Ditto With Cheerleaders Please refer to what I just wrote and apply it to them.
Half Time Kick Both KDWB and WDVD go out and do a sponsored halftime kick. Random student is chosen to try a field goal for a $10,000 scholarship provided by the sponsor. A bank in the case of the Twin Cities.
The Bucket List In Charlotte, I got Jo Jo Wright to go out and cheer a high school football game. Not in a cheerleader dress thing but in a male cheer uniform. The set up was that he'd always wanted to cheer a game but his school in Texas wasn't progressive enough to have guys on the squad. "Do you think there's a school out there that would let me cheer just ONE game?" And it turned out there were about a dozen. He picked one, trained and debuted.
