Dave Ryan and I were trading "You know what would be cool...?" emails. BTW: that's a great thought-starter. "You know what would be cool....if you could get the astronauts on the Space Shuttle to flash their lights when they pass over and that's the cue to call!"
Dave said that he's always thought it would be cool if you did a promotion where there was ONE phone number in town that was worth $1000. All you have to do is call and ask. Maybe spike in a few digits to narrow it down. I actually....wait for it...err'd on the side of caution and suggested that that might get the station sued for millions and millions of dollars by harassed citizenry.
This is the same idea but without the suits and legal action.
You take a pair of primo backstage passes and give them to an intern and send him/her/it out to drive around. Honk at them and win. What you'd do is tweet or otherwise provide hints every ten minutes
- The driver is a woman
- She has black hair
- She is west of 35
- She is north of 394
- The car is American made
- The numbers 4 and 8 appear in the license plate
- The car is red
- It's a Ford Tundra
Now, again wearing my lawyer hat (which is a very expensive hat that just billed you $1800 for reading this far), I'd check with local and state ordinances about honking horns. The alternatives are to flip her off or shake your fist and scream at her.
Tornado Relief
Drake Donovan at CBS in Pittsburgh put together one of the BEST produced recaps of any kind of radio station relief effort that I've been lucky enough to ever see. This is freaking dynamite and is a nice lead in to a session at Conclave next week on disaster preparedness.
