"Bug'd"
This was something that originally was going to be called the Mike Hunt at Wired in Philly. For some unknown reason the GM didn't like the name and instead of just switching it up, bagged the whole thing all together.
It's very simple. You hide a microphone in town. Find it and win. Based only on the ambient audio clues, ie: you pot it up and listen. This is the kind of stuff Radio did when it was fun and didn't over-think stuff.
There are three ways to pull it off.
Pre-Tape
As done by K-Rock in Charlottetown pre-recorded audio at the sites where the mikes were hidden. I've attached their synopsis and a promo. Some good suggestions on how to make $ off this. The general sentiment was that the next time they'd do it with live mikes. I'm also attaching one of their promos.
Auto-Pick Up Cell Phone
This is how Jamz in Birmingham did it. They presented it as being Kanye's cell phone that he'd lost when he was in town. They put a cellphone in a plastic Nare-type egg and hid it in the market. They called several times a day, it would answer and you listened for the sound of traffic, bells, planes, dogs, whatever. And obviously, you encourage people to make noise and then listen to see if they hear themselves which would obviously indicate they were close to it.
Actual Live Mikes
As done by GCap in the UK. I'm attaching a power point presentation they put together. There were multiple "bugs" in the market. This is from the OM:
someone was always watching - just used the street team covertly... that was also useful as we had them take pictures that we then blurred etc to go in the VIP club online as extra clues... Well since we last spoke about Bug'd I made a change to how we did it to create a bit more pace to the promotion... so last time I did this we had the Bug's live for 'x' number of hours/days so for example "a new bug has gone live and it's worth £10,000... but we've only got 72 hours to find it before it self destructs..." this actually worked much better because we had complete control and weren't left with just one bug in action and people loosing interest - plus the theatre of the mind stuff was better... we imaged it up like SPOOKS (not sure if thats hit US TV)... but it was all spy themed... worked well.
And
Geographically our TSA is fairly big - it's over 1 million across the South of Wales so we had the Bugs in our key post codes. So not always that close to the station. We did retrieve it each day - we had too anyway to ensure that we had fresh batteries in the radio mic otherwise we could have been in all kinds of trouble...
Halloween Front Yard Accoutrement
Many of you work with theme parks and "professional" haunted houses in October. One of the stations, as a sales promotion with one of these clients, is going to take a winners' front yard and turn it into a cemetery with all of the expected scary decorations and gimmickery. An AWESOME prize that will give the station some valid excuses to talk about the client's seasonal operation without it coming off as a sales liner.
Club Games
As in-touch with my inner 22 y/o female as I am, I've always had a focus group of friends in that demo that I can go to bounce ideas off and get feed back from. The "group" was that one that picked a black convertible Mustang as the best prize for when KDWB did the 2nd round of Fugitive. And. They. Nailed. It.
I asked Cassie who goes to UW-Stout about bar games that are big with her peers about a few months ago. She said beer pong and cornhole were beginning to be "the things". And dang it if a lot of clubs aren't incorporating those into "nights" and contesting. Beasley in Ft. Myers actually did a Beer Pong Championship as a campaign. I'm getting their rules for you to submit if you want to take a stab at it.
