Great Moments In Local Radio
Our entire existence seemingly has become "How do we protect the license!?" How about, thinking, "How we do live up to having the privilege of being broadcasters and being licensed to serve our communities?" Just a thought. Stop operating from a State of Fear and operate of a State of Community. (I know; I'm nuts)
From Terry O'Donnell at Fly 92 in Albany where the region is flooded, without power and generally having a picturesque Sunday:
- Website is updated with all kinds of vital info, we bagged all syndicated programming with live, local jocks this weekend with local phoners and weather updates.
Tomorrow morning all the stations will be out at different Price Chopper supermarket locations to collect donations of food, water, toys, and money. Already we're partnered with the Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army and the Regional Food bank.
Brian and Chrissy will do the show from the studio with Wanda at the store, then they'll head up to do cut-ins. I'm supposed to be on vacation, but you know how that goes. I'll be in tomorrow. -
The greatest promotions in history were never contests or things we planned out. It was Radio doing what it does/did best: reacting and helping the audience. Here's the link, which refutes the "it IS rocket science and we can't just go and..." theory of the internet. http://www.fly92.com

Many/most/all/some/none of you have done the contest where someone wins a trip and there's a methodology that involves them inviting a friend. What if you did a contest where you took an on-air caller, they get a concert ticket for them AND one for their friend, if they return the DJ's text query within 30 seconds. You want the initial on-air component because most text contesting is done dry and boring and with no excitement. You do contests on the air not because people will play, but for the excitement and the promo. Caller gives the DJ their friends addy, he quickly tm's them and asks if they want to go and that they have 30 seconds to RSVP. If they do, they get the ticket. If they don't, the designated caller loses theirs too.
The Text That Keeps On Giving...Sort Of
In what will be the last Sugtextion of the week, Kane at Hot 99.5 in DC puts a spin on something that he's been doing on the morning show. Going into the 7:50 am stopset, he runs some imaging that reminds the female listeners to take their birth control pill for the day. Kane's idea was to do the reminder in the form of a text. The Morning After Text?
