The Best Promo Quote Of 2011
From the lovely and talented Monchai Pungeaw at Peak in Boise:
"The further the remote is from the station, the more opportunities for an unexpected delay to occur"
Since life is exciting enough without getting yelled at on Monday morning because the vehicle was late to the remote at Rite Aid, factor in time, distance, traffic, construction, weather and intangibles like, well, DJ's being DJ's. I'm going to guess that in all of his two decades of Promotions in places like San Diego, Phoenix and Boise, Monchai has never been late to an event.
The Grammys
I heard a station giving away a Grammy trip....if you liked them on Facebook. From what I can tell they may have added a couple of hundred. I don't care what your criteria is, that's not a homerun. Especially when you consider that the Grammys pretty much define "Money Can't Buy Prize". It's every possible aspect of pop culture rolled into one. And then multiplied by a thousand. This is a million dollar prize.
So treat it that way. And imagine going to Steven Spielberg (another member of the entertainment industry, just like us) and saying "Steve, I've got this trip to give away to the ultimate music industry event of the year. How should we contest it?" I just can't imagine him saying, "Stick it in the VIP Club and do Bonus Codes through Hardees."
First, and I can't emphasize this enough: your listeners DON'T CARE that your DJ's get to go and broadcast from the Grammys. There's no benefit to them that people who they consider to be overpaid and overprivileged get even more time off work to go and party at the Grammys.
The "send a listener to cover the Grammys" has never not been a homerun. I heard a woman on KS95 in the Twin Cities who clearly was approaching this as being the greatest weekend of her life and she was sneaking into parties, bum-rushing celebs for interviews; it was great. She sounded like she was having the freaking time of her life. Conversely I've heard morning show broadcasts that we almost as exciting as a two hour appearance at a Rite Aid.
There could/SHOULD be a web element as you screen, audition and vote for your pop-arazzi for the awards.
Also, as an audio medium, I've always thought it was nice that we encourage/force people to listen to play our games so Grammy Crammy continues to be a fave.
