Ain't Never Been Done
I don't think anyone has ever melded Halloween and Valentines. With that in mind...
...when I was at Kiss 102 in Charlotte, Mrs. Paige and I double-dated with Jo Jo Wright and the psycho record rep he was seeing, and went to see "Ghost" when it hit the dollar theater. It had been out for awhile, we'd heard it was good and finally it was in a venue that was in our price range.
We were standing in the lobby when the doors opened up and the people from the previous screening started streaming out. Most were women and they were sobbing. Balling. Dabbing their eyes with Kleenex. I looked over at Jo Jo and said something like "Uh oh."
What if...and this is very very out there, but it would also push a zillion buttons with your listeners, you found a listener whose sweetheart passed away. You brought in a psychic, and you married the two across the great beyond.
Obviously it's not legally binding. Obviously you would need to do this with respect and good taste. (At least as much respect and good taste as you can have marrying a listener and a ghost.)
It was like six years ago when 97 Rock in Buffalo surprised a listener by flying her boyfriend back from Afghanistan and he proposed to her in the studio. John Hager said that you could hear women across upstate New York spontaneously burst into tears. Every woman at Citadel in that market was sobbing.
This bit would do that.
Best Thing You Could Do For A Military Guy
Dave Ryan at KDWB in the Twin Cities, like a lot of stations have done, did a great bit once where he recorded greetings, messages and music for local men and women who are deployed in Iraq. They burned a bunch of CD's and these were given to family members to send over to their loved ones. What would be larger? Find a woman who is pregnant and whose spouse/boyfriend is overseas. Get audio of the baby's heartbeat and the sonogram picture of the baby, and post them on the website so he can log on to see/hear his new baby.
BTW: www.uglydress.com is a great collection of BAD bridesmaid and prom dresses.
Jail: Always Comedy Gold
When Karson and Kennedy were at Q-107.5 in Memphis, they were the first delve into the morning jail bit. They sent Country Cory down to the courthouse (at 201 Poplar) to interview people in the morning as they got out of jail. It was called "What You Doing In The 201" and it was FUNNY. But then, I think that still-drunk hookers who have just bonded out are funny.
Winning Because, Well, You're Special
Back before Granham tanked it, 100.3 Jamz in Dallas was massive. Huge. Clifton got them doing a non-traditional contest that was a homerun for them. Q in Philly did this for awhile back when we consulted them: just take random callers and award them prizes. No annoying pre-sell. Just take a caller, congratulate them and give them a prize. Special Ed at Wild 94.1 in Tampa has put together something similar for the people in the database: "Just letting u know that I have now started creating a Freakshow listener database that has peoples full name, address, phone number, and e.mail......
From this list, I randomly send out a prize pack with tshirts, dvds, cds, etc....THANKING them for listening to the show. I've also linked up with dunkin donuts and now deliver a couple of dozen donuts to their homes and jobs.......trying to make them feel as special and connected to the show/station as possible...."
