March Music Madness
KUBE in Seattle did this before the internet had truly offered an easier option. They had entry forms with a playoff grid of songs, just like the NCAA tourney when they have the 86 teams and the pairing blanks all the way down to the champion. You were supposed to fill in all the winners of the battles between two songs, all the way down to what you thought would be the #1 song as voted by the audience. You mailed this in and the weekend of the Final Four, there was a Battle Of The Jams thing on the air, pitting two songs an hour against each other. Everyone who picked the #1 song won $93. MUCH simpler would be to list the grid and pairings on the website and have people enter that way. Great bit.
For Spring Break
One of the stations is doing a mess 'o trips to Spring Break. What if you did Spring Break Starter Kits: a can cooler, a t-shirt and a logoed spray bottle for getting the t-shirt soaked and turning it into a wet t-shirt. Even better would be t-shirts that have a giant circle around the chest area with tiny instructions that say "Wet thoroughly for best results. Wait ten minutes. Re-soak as needed."
Spring Break Reporters
The problem with sending radio people to things like the Grammys and the Billboards and Mardi Gras is that generally the listeners don't care. Seriously. But for some stupid reason, the hook that works is taking a winner and giving them the responsibility of covering the festivities. Why? Because they're not jaded. They'll get into it. I heard a winner on KS95 in Minneapolis a couple of years ago. She'd won their Grammy's trip and was calling from LA to recount an evening of star encounters and party crashing. She did a better re-cap then any jock I've ever heard. You could hear her goosebumps following the biggest night of her life. It was terrific Radio. Can you find some students who are going to Spring Break and make them reporters? If you could pay for their way that would be great. But even just sending them with a picture phone in search of local kids doing stupid shit would be great. Think "MTV" in your presentation.
