Versus
From the lovely and Canadian Sherri K at Hot in Sudbury: Kind of like the Bucket List except different...You know how we went to separate schools together? Anyway.. It's called VERSUS... Our first challenge [being Canadian and up north] was SKATING of course. Are you Team Matt or Team Sherri? Either way there was some intense trash talk. http://hot935.ca/viewvideo.asp?id=32&Category=VERSUS
Eventually, our listeners (well like the 3 we have plus my mom) can give us challenges to do or we can hopefully eventually take them on!
Cinco de Mayo
It's almost impossible to gauge my giddiness that people are actually out planning and selling promotions for things in April and May.
Tracy Austin did "Single de Mayo" when she was in Philly. Big. Large. Fun. Essentially an evening of bodyshots, tequila, music, tequila and other fluids.
At the end of the day, nothing beats a good Chihuahua Race for Cinco de Mayo. Looked good. Sounded good. They made money and a dog pee'd on one of the DJ's feet. THAT is a homerun.
For No Apparent Reason
I'm writing this, sitting on a plane, on a runway, waiting for air traffic to clear and allow us to take off. Which struck me as an idea: why not the next time there's a blizzard and people are stranded for hours and hours on planes, have your morning show be "trapped" on one of these aircraft. The entire show done on cell.
Why? Why the fuck not?
We have become so researched and strategic and scheduled out that it allows zero room for spontaneity. The craft, the Art, is dying.
It reminds of when going to see Janet Jackson in 1990. It was the 2nd stop of her Rhythm Nation Tour. It was a spectacle. But it was so choreographed to the second that she didn't have "room" to even pause and banter with the crowd. Nary a "Hi Charlotte!" A robot could have been programmed to do that show. And trust me, if management could save money by not having talent, they'd do it.
Laz at Power 96 in Miami did his show live from the station's elevator in January. Why? Again, why not? They're prepped it in advance that the thing was a death trap. Always breaking down. And then, one morning, he's late. Finally calls in from the emergency call phone in the elevator where he was stuck for four hours. Just a blip on the radar that will stand out more then just the regularly scheduled stuff.
Back in the day when they OWNED mornings in the Twin Cities, Hines & Berglund would occasionally throw a change up. Just something out of left field that caught everyone by surprise. And it was always tagged with "for no apparent reason." Broadcasting from the roof of a White Castle...for no apparent reason.
That's the stuff that cuts through. The 1%. The intangible.
