Great Moments In Station Composites
From a great station, Radiowave 96.7 in Windhoek:
Free Radio Still Kicks Hiney
The Mecca of Celebrity Drug Rehab is called Hazelden and it's a convenient 5 miles from where I live. I guess the idea is that if you're an A Lister with a coke issue, Perez and TMZ ain't going to find you in Lindstrom, Minnesota. (True story: had an AE whose brother was there and called to check on how he was doing, only to interrupt his ping pong game with Elton John. He'd also been watching soap operas with Eric Clapton)
So, post-Whitney, Dave Ryan from KDWB reached out to Hazelden to get some of their counselors on 48 hours after hear death to discuss the challenges of fame and drug addiction. It was great Radio and way better than posting the same Whitney news as seen on 8000 other station websites. Steve-O got this from one of the head people at the clinic:
Just a quick follow-up to let you know that in the aftermath of my interview with Dave on Monday I received six phone calls from people/families seeking help for addiction-related problems.
Of those six, two are in the process of being admitted to Hazelden, two others have entered other programs in the Twin Cities and the other two are in process of receiving guidance.
In other words, your program had an immediate and significant impact.
And Further Evidence To Support My Supposition, re: Hiney
Cox in Birmingham is a pretty freaking amazing cluster. Seriously. They do great non-traditional contesting like Bug'ed and Fuge and all of the non-Birthday Game stuff. But...they balance it out with being so ridiculously woven into the fiber of the community that it would blow your mind. They. Miss. Nothing.
So, a few weeks ago, a tornado hit an elementary school in the pre-dawn hours and wrecked it to the point that it's being torn down and rebuilt. What did 95.7 Jamz do? They collected enough toys and stuff to rebuild the playground. http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2012/02/957_jamz_donates_three_trucklo.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
You can't beat stations that do this stuff.
