Trending
Every market seemingly has a suburb that everyone puts down. Mancow zeroed in on Concord when he was in San Francisco. In Charlotte it's Gastonia. The morning show here has had some fun with Anoka and Coon Rapids.
Dave at KDWB kind of expanded beyond the local hillbillies last month :
this morning we started what became the NUMBER TWO TRENDING TOPIC IN THE WORLD on Twitter! It was #whitetrashpeopleproblems. 20 minutes after we started talking about it, it was trending number 4 in Minneapolis, then about an hour later it was Number One in the US, and about 90 minutes in, we were NUMBER TWO IN THE WORLD (right behind some One Direction shit). After another hour we'd plummeted out of the top, but WOW, that was cool shit while it lasted!
A Smokin' Club Promotion
Thanks to Lene at Cumulus/Albuquerque for sticking a cool idea on our radar. About once-a-week I'll get an e-mail from an AE asking for, and I quote, "I have a club that needs something new." This would work for about 2% of the clubs out there, but Lene tells me that one of her favorite clubs does "White Trash Wednesday". For a buck you get a Pabst and a cigarette.
I live in Scandia, Minnesota. I'd be there in a heartbeat.
Things Your Listeners Won't "Get"
It only makes sense: people in business use terms that are specific to their industry. Sitting around with a bunch of plasma physicists, it's likely they'd be tossing around terms that would be sailing over my head like 737's.
Ditto with Radio People. Our problem? Sometimes the place where we use our exclusive terms are the public airwaves. I was driving across Michigan last month and heard a station doing a trip with a great prize. A trip to Paris. But...as the DJ announced, you needed to listen for the Rock In Paris "sounder". What's a sounder? We know. Do your listeners? I have the same reaction when I hear people talk on the air about "spots" and "promos". People don't like to feel stupid. And using words that are foreign to them will do that.
Things That Blow Up
Or in the words of SCTV, "It blowed up good!" One of my favorite summer/warm weather weekend contests is the Inflatable Weekend. All weekend long you do stuff like inflatable pool toys, Slip 'N Slides, and pool and beach toys that blow up. The key is to play with the theme and allude to love dolls and other unsavory items that inflate.
