The Last Summer Ever
Jamz in Albany wins the cassette from the prize closet for the best Summer umbrella. J Will, the morning host, is going to spend the summer crossing stuff off his bucket list. Whitewater rafting, doing a listeners job that he's always wanted to do, etc. Most of these are being done WITH listeners ala "Kate University" at Mix in Boise, and the people whose suggestions he uses will also cop an iPod.
Fire...
As I referenced the other day, KOB-FM in Albuquerque was the only station in town to do anything with nearby wildfires other than run PSA's telling people to text a code to the Red Cross. Scintillating.
From Danny Vigil: Yesterday morning, we went live from Smith's asking for donations of any kind of water (bottles, gallons etc.) After a morning of broadcasting, donations from multiple listeners, and a generous donation from Smith's, we collected more than 300 gallons of water.
This morning, we loaded up our station vehicle and drove it down to Ruidoso.. We left at 5AM and arrived about 8:30AM, calling in and giving updates along the way.. We interviewed one of the head fire chiefs and the main question was, "What can our listeners do in the future if they want to help in any fire of this magnitude?"
...To The Rain
Minnesota has been the recipient of some Biblical rains over the past month and the city of Duluth was literally shut down. Everything is closed, it's beyond "mess". Major kudos to Mix 108 where they cancelled all their promotions and contests and went wall to wall with coverage and relief efforts.
The airstaff wss also camped out on FB and connecting with the audience ala B-96/Chicago and Y-94 during blizzards and 'NOU in Indy and Rewind in Cincy during ice storms.
I can't imagine Mark Zuckerberg sitting around his dorm saying "Hey, let's come up with a way for radio stations to spam the audience with pleas to attend their remotes!". It was about a community. And at least in '10, '11 and '12, during stuff like floods and blizzards, the community goes to Facebook.
KDWB and Clear Channel in the Twin Cities went out and did a car wash fundraiser and a campaign to collect supplies at 22 local Culvers. http://www.kdwb.com/cc-common/gallery/photos.html?album_id=322952&p=19377377#/2/19377375
