Ticket Upgrades
Mike Culotta with 'QYK in Tampa may have stumbled on a way to take a pair of 5th row floor seats and get some mileage out of them. First, anytime you can flood a venue with people wearing your shirts, it's great. His station does neon shirts that often show up on the radar at the airport, ie: you can see them from a mile away. His morning show will go down with the 4th or 5th row seats and find someone, say, in the 10th row, and will switch tickets do they can sit closer. I mean, who doesn't want that?
They then take the 10th row seats and find someone in the 20th row, and take THOSE seats and find someone in the back on the floor and then someone middle-up on the side and then someone in the back row. For the average person, moving closer is great. And they can get 6 or 7 winners starting with one pair of tickets.
In lieu of shirts, having people do booty patches also works, as does what K-102 in Minny does and tell them to "Just wear K-102 on yourself". People do and they get creative and a LOT of them do it. We're so desensitized to good seats that we forget what great incentives they are for people to market your station.
Great Moments In Concert Ownership
I've done Street School four times in the past month and I continually hit on "the semblance of activity". You want to do stuff that gets people at your booth because if no one is standing there, I don't want to be the leper who is the only person who seemingly will agree to be associated with you.
And then Hunter Greene with Hot in Houston sent me a photo of KRBE's tent at Pitbull and NO ONE was around it.
KOB-FM in Albuquerque had Kelly Clarkson. Here is the recap:
KOB-FM scored the Olympic Gold Medal in "ass-kicking-of-the-competition" at the Kelly Clarkson show tonight. It was us against 3 competitors...two CHRs and one Hot AC. When I arrived at 2:30pm for my live show at 3...I was REALLY surprised to see that only us and one of the competitors had bannered so far. Typically for a show like that, it's a blood bath for space.
What we had:
MORE signage on the roads leading to the venue
MORE bodies in logoed t-shirts
MORE VIP and lower level tickets for upgrades
MORE backstage passes for both acts
Listeners in homemade station shirts
3 Shake Weights
A bullhornWhat THEY had:
A small group of people signing up to win ONE pair of tickets and backstage passes.
Need I say more? At one point, the competition closest to us started trying to shout over our crowd that was cheering for our shake weight contestants.
It was...just...beautiful. For a quick minute, I forgot about who I worked for and remembered how much FUN kicking the competitions ass really is.
Here's the link to the rest of the pics, already live on Facebook...
