Web Contesting

Before the web, there were station vehicles. And that's where you dumped all the crap that you didn't want to give away on the air. Power 96 in Miami was probably the only exception because their street presence was so overwhelming that it actually had value.

Now we stick most of the crap either on the station site or Facebook. "Click on the Jimmy Johns logo to score a six inch party sub!" That right there is the epitome of Show Business.

Peak in Boise and the Pamal stations have stood out for doing some pretty cool web contesting. Shooting galleries, games of Clue. Fun stuff. KDWB and some of the CC stations have really done a great job with "Submit, Post & Vote" contesting like "Hot Brides".

The Travel Channel and American Airlines do good web promotions. There's usually a series of tasks that you are led through and that qualify you depending on your scores for points or trips. American just wrapped one up that had you working through some kind of series of spy thriller challenges as part of a tie in with the latest "Bourne" film. WAY better than "Sing The Kit Kat Jingle".

For The Morning Shows

There's a new book that's been getting some buzz called "Spy The Lies". It was written by four former CIA officers and basically teaches you how to be a Human Lie Detector. Don Tennant is one of the authors and has been making the interview circuit. Hit him on Twitter at @dontennant

It's "Take Your Kid To College Week" a few weeks ago. I heard "Roommate Horror Stories" as a topic. It was outstanding. Because we've all had them.

Also, I noticed on Facebook today that about six of my alleged friends had posted "Here's (kid) ready for the first day of school!" pics. This should be something listeners can share on your social media page.

And finally, "Mean Girls". Without going into details, this has been a spirited topic on one of the stations after a listener called in following a class reunion. She was stunned that, even twenty years later, the Mean Girls were still total bitches. "Do Mean Girls ever rehabilitate?" has been huge.
