Social & Sandy Media
I think Hurricane Sandy may be the moment that Radio figured out that Facebook can be for more than just spamming people about club gigs.
I've seen Rewind in Cincy and NOU in Indy following ice storms, and WPGC following the DC power outage, dozens of stations after the Aurora movie theater shootings, Y94 in Fargo during a blizzard, Kiss in Dallas during a tornado...go to where their listeners were, which was Facebook, and actually connect with them.
Some great-and-still-unfolding examples at:
Let me ask you this – when you spam the listeners with club info or post some pop culture stuff that is readily accessable from 18,000,000 other sources, how many comments do you get? Right. Now look at "Who still has power?" from Karson and Kennedy at Mix in Boston. www.facebook.com/karsonandkennedy
Wired in Philly where Bethany Kent has been working on it since Saturday. I love the "Hurricane Angels" thing http://www.facebook.com/#!/wired965philly?fref=ts
AMP in Boston has done great and also redid their Rihanna contest imaging to reflect that, well, they're in a hurricane. http://www.facebook.com/#!/1033ampradio?fref=ts Can you imagine listening to a station in the middle of something like this and their promos were unchanged? They'd sound like idiots. 92.3 Now in NY created (again, what a concept) some content with Lulu and Lala today http://www.facebook.com/#!/923now?fref=ts .
Jammin' in New London covering local damage and posting listener pics http://www.facebook.com/#!/Jammin1077?fref=ts, Marissa at Fly 92 in Albany is notable for actually asking a question that invites a response, re: THE QUICKFIX http://www.facebook.com/#!/fly923?fref=ts Inviting a reply. What a concept. And from 96.1 Kiss FM in Poughkeepsie they had a nice helpful tip re: water bottles http://www.facebook.com/kissfmhv
And because we can be stupid, why not. What is the inevitable TV shot with hurricane? The weather person battling the rain on the beach. Q-101.7 in Glens Falls has taken a stuffed cat, tied it to a poll and will be posting videos as it spins in the win. http://www.facebook.com/Q1017
