The Anti-Intervier
I refer to Hot 89.9 in Ottawa about once a day. They get on CNN a few times a year and never for killing anyone. This is a perfect example. They were given a list of things to specifically NOT ask One Direction. So...Rush from the station started the interview and then ended it because anything he WANTED to ask, he wasn't supposed to. And...buzzpalooza.
This is like the KOB-FM thing in Albuquerque. The stations that have interviewed Obama and played it straight got less-than-zip in terms of any outside coverage. The Morning Mayhem asked about super powers and it went worldwide in terms of press. Arguably the biggest press orgy I've ever seen.
You can get 8000 1D interviews from 8000 various sources. So why would you want to play by
the rules and do the same thing? Most famous Prince interview ever? American Bandstand in about 1982. He told the band just before they played to just stand there and be silent. Which they did and Dick Clark ended up looking very uncomfortable as his questions were met with blank stares. No one would remember Prince on ABS if they're happily answered inane questions from the host.
Even More One Direction
Equally as cool as Hottawa and a cluster everyone should strive to work for is Oasis Radio Group in Ft. Wayne, where Hot 107.9 is the CHR.
They got a trip to see night two of the tour in New York City and as Phil Becker said, "This is too good to blow on social media or win-and-qualify".
They did a version of "Follow The Directions" that KDWB, Kiss 95.1 and Q-107.5 did. But instead of physical directions to follow, the directions were for "actions".
There was an appt. time each week day at 3:30 pm. No reposting of the direction. As Phil told someone who called and said it would be hard to listen at 3:30, "Well, then you probably won't win." I know; making people listen to the radio; what a concept.
The first direction was to go to a client's location where they were given a very nice airline boarding pass. They handed out 300 of them. Each pass had ten "times" that needed to be verified and stamped. 283 were eventually turned in fully completed. That is huge.
Next one was to come and tour the station
Next one was to come and show you follow Hot on Twitter
Next one was to come and show you follow the station on Instagram
Next one was to come and show us you have a sticker on your car
Next one was to come and show all your presets locked on Hot
Next one was to make your own station shirt
Etc. Etc.
They announced the winner drawn from the 283, ...and will then announced the next 1D contest, which will send a winner to see five consecutive shows on the tour.
