The Biggest Thing Your Station Could Ever Do
10X bigger then any cash contest. 1000X bigger then any remote.
Who hasn't seen the weekly videos that circulate of parents returning from Afghanistan, and not gotten gotten a little misty
And then tell me what would happen if you worked through the local Guard or Reserve to get a dad back for the birth of his grandchild, or his son's valedictorian speech or his daughter's wedding. Tell me that that wouldn't be the biggest thing your station has ever ever done.
You can find 1000 reasons NOT to do it. Or you can start making some calls.
BTW: as I've only mentioned a hundred times, 97 Rock in Buffalo made ONE call and got a guy back to surprise his girlfriend in the studio on Valentines Day.
If that fails, then webcam it on your site so dad/mom can watch from overseas.
Out Of The Station Brainstorming
I don't see many "great" stations that don't do this quarterly. One of the aforementioned great stations just did and now have Mothers Day, Cinco de Mayo, proms Spring Book, theme park bus trips, a car show, a charitable campaign in the parks, an end-of-college campaign, all their weekends between now and Memorial Day, a Teen event, a morning show trip and their kick off to summer, done, planned, on the books and being sold. Gives you hope, doesn't it?
Clubs/Restaurants/Comedy
Back before Oprah got preachy, at least once a year she'd do a job switch with a listener and she'd be a cop or a flight attendant for a day.
The new venue for clients, the better-than-just-some-spots forum, is viral videos. As witnessed by Will It Blend. Could this dude have bought TV spots? Sure. Would they have been as effective and CHEAP as the video series? Hell no.
One of the DJ's last year did a video series for a client that was a comedy club. It documented the process as he was trained by a professional comic over several weeks, him writing his material and then he made his debut at the client on a Friday night. That was filmed too. Training the morning show how to cook for a restaurant client (setting themselves ablaze is assumed.) Bartending. There are a couple of genres of advertisers who would lend themselves to this. And it would as a bonus, be great content for the website.
