Best Quote Ever
Last month I was dealing with a station that had crawled inside the metaphorical box and was getting very comfortable. I pointed out that nothing great in life was ever accomplished by people who played safe and didn't occasionally break a rule. I love this quote:
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. (George Bernard Shaw)
Yes: Call In Contests Still Work
Do quite a few people text more than talk on their phones? Absolutely. Is text to win a viable methodology, absolutely...as long as you get the winner pay off, which is really the only reason to do contests.
I've seen a few stations pull contesting off the air completely and it's just destroyed whatever excitement they had. Paint drying is more exciting to listen to than an VIP Club and "Click to register to win Taylor tickets!".
The biggest contest probably ever was The Last Contest in San Diego. When they finally played the cue, it shut down phone service to a sizeable section of the market. 102 Jamz in Greenboro regularly disrupted phone service when they would play a song that was worth $1000.
99.1 Hits FM is doing trips to see Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake in LA when you hear two songs back to back. One of the local hospitals had to put up signs next to phones directing employees which line to use when the station played a Bruno song.
And for those of you running national contests: it's occasionally alright NOT to run winner audio. For example let's say you're a station in Seattle that plays Beyonce and the winner has a THICK Southern accent and says "I'm gonna use the money to take my wife to the Dierks Bentley show and then to Pensacola for the drag races!"...don't run it.
