Summer Interns
- Again, you want 20. Minimum. That insures you have three left by the end of the summer.
- Polite is nice. Shy isn't. You want to screen for people who are out-going and aren't going to hide in the van.
- Look for people who have skillz(tm). Like Intern Gabby at KZIA who could play sax and rap.
- There is NOTHING wrong with giving them street names and little profiles on the website. If anything, it adds some character to stations.
- Grill them for what's happening in college. I heard about Beer Pong a full year before mainstream society courtesy of a promo kid in Rochester, NY. Kind of like...
Can Jam

Festival Swag
My mom was a Wet Wipe Nazi. I didn't get it until I became a dad.
One of the stations has a wing event coming up. Pretty much the messiest of the Messy Foods Group. Did you know that you could get logoed wet wipes? Did you know that you could get them with codes also on them? So, maybe do six runs of wipes with six codes, mix them all together and hand them out at a festival and watch the Loyal Listener bounceback.
Future Olin Mills Photogs On Your Street Team
You really want to constantly update pics from the streets this summer. The kids should never go out without:
- Letting the announcer know where they're going.
- Doing a vibe call.
- Bringing back pics.
Dave Ryan did Boat Patrol last summer at KDWB. It was an exercise in Rocket Science. He went out on his boat, brought some promo kids, did a couple of calls and got some shots with huge numbers of listeners living the Minnesota lifestyle out on the lakes.
Some stations do a better job at getting photos for the website. Why? Because usually they do a quick 30 minute class with the street team. Not just showing them HOW to take pics, but what they're looking for.
Cinderella Story
Q-104 in Halifax did perhaps my favorite golf contest. Didn't involve direct mail or database or texting. They did "Closest To The Pinhead" and dressed the morning guy in full pads and a helmet and stuck him out on a driving range. Hit him and you won.
