Great Moments In Swag
In the beginning there was Chapstik or generic-in-our-price-range lip balms. And it was, if not good, certainly above average.
With the rebranding of Z-95.3 in Vancouver they restocked with crap(tm) and among the most popular items is NICE organic lip stuff in round containers. The audience freaking loves the stuff. They were $4.95 per unit. Promolipbalm.com
"Music Math"
I lobbed out Meme It Mondays last week and Troy McAllum at Boom 97.3 replied with some stuff that his station has done to brand photos because their competition has been stealing and sharing. And then he added this genius concept:
I create 2 photos (one with the answer, one with the question) and post one of Facebook, the other (with the answer) on our webpage. The Facebook pic has a bitly link back to our website to the picture of the photo that has the answer. The attached one had over 1000 clicks back to our website in 90 minutes and the ones that followed had over 400 each. I monitor the comments to make sure the answer isn't revealed as well as comment and like to be interactive. They are easy to make, include station branding, interactive and increase traffic to the web and build engagement on Facebook.
The Secret Sound
This dates back to Marconi and in whatever is the ratings methodology that era, it kills. Why? Because it engages the 96% of people who get sucked in while sitting in traffic waiting to hear their favorite song.
Magic in Colorado Springs brought the contest into the 20th Century with "What The Hell Is That?" as the title.
The Black Box has been done over and over and over the years: six or seven items in a box hung from a crane. ID the items based on sounds or noises they make to win a trip or cash prize. You want the box from the crane because it gets people's attention and is a lot more compelling than some billboard.
And then...there's Bug'd. Live mikes hidden around town that are turned on at appt. times when you listen for ambient sfx that might lead you to them. Find and get a prize.
This was done the first time with an auto-pickup mobile phone in Birmingham. Lots of ways to pull it off. It's on my radar because this will be the Fall ratings contest "somewhere".
