David Letterman
I was on the fence for the first 20 years but he actually turned out to be a moderate success. If you look at the first two years of his show, it was ALL about throwing stuff off buildings.
2Day-FM in Grand Prairie had some front row tickets to a comedian so they had listeners #golfballs, picked 104 at random, assigned them each a golf ball and dropped 'em.
Cheerleaders On The Air
Since the era of Marconi, having cheerleaders on the air has always been a homerun and if you do your job correctly, you'll have every ear in the school on the station that night. That requires:
- Sending some posters over to get put up.
- Having your night show cut personalized morning announcements to run the week leading up on the PA.
- Tipping the school paper and sending them recap pics.
In addition to the ground work of coaching the kids to social mediaize the crap out of it leading up to their appearance. http://q104.cbslocal.com/alys-high-school-shout-out/
Free T-Shirts!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love t-shirts. They're our best item of swag and there is a tremendous amount that you can do with them. You can give them to listeners and make them wear them for 30 days to win concert tickets.
You can take 100 and stick them on Facebook and BLOW IT UP.
In Charlotte, I had a MINIMAL amount of money to work with, even by 2014 standards in US radio. And I put it all into shirts. They were everywhere. So when there was a Thanksgiving parade with 200,000 people and we promoted to wear your shirt to the parade and maybe get spotted for tickets, we counted over 300 from our float.
Could you turn it over to Sales and have them try to sell sponsorships? Absolutely. Has that ever worked? A couple of times.
http://www.radiopromos.net/ will do that for you. I was skeptical but the samples they sent me were outstanding quality, NASCAR'ed with advertisers and with big freaking radio station logos on them.
