Contingency Plans
Following a tornado last year we had everyone on an email thing within an hour and actual progress was being made until the Marketing Director intervened and started slowed the progress down to a glacial speed. It would be at least 6 days before they would be able to get it up and running, which is an eternity. We dropped it.
Bill Pasha with MBMI put together a really on-target piece about having your ducks in their rows so you have everything you need and there's no down time. Kiss 102 in Charlotte I think was the only FM in the market on the air 48 hours after Hurricane Hugo because the engineer had the presence of mind to not listen to the locals who said hurricanes don't get that far inland, and went and got generators and a LOT of gas.
Lick It For Tickets
They just wrapped this up at Q in Memphis with daily winners of Instagrammed shots winning Katy Perry tickets. My favorite was one day the item was "Lick your instrument".
Proof That You Can Overthink Prizes
Townsquare in Missoula got over 10,000 votes for a free haircut. http://1075zoofm.com/see-people-in-missoula-whove-had-a-bad-hair-day-photos/
Hunger Games
One of the stations has 200 tickets to the movie and initially was going to do a contest amongst all the local highschools: the school that collected the most canned food would receive the tickets so that the kids who participated could all go.
The local school district is "difficult" so an audible has been called and now 48 fraternities and sororities at the local university will be vying for the block of tickets. They'll have one week to collect the most canned and non-perishable food (based on weight). And we're brainstorming ways for clients to get involved, so in addition to these college students marketing the station, they'll make some money too.
