Alternatives To Grand Prize Drawings
Further proof that we've dumbed down contesting to the point that its wallpaper is the staggeringly low numbers of people who will actually participate in our promotions.
So let's say you have a great prize and a bunch of qualifiers, whatever could you do?
Q-104 in Halifax had a trip to the Playboy Mansion which is generally not something that you can get through a travel agent, ie: it's a million dollar prize for a certain demo of listeners. The pumpkin was filled with numbered balls. Closest to the target won for its designated listener.
2Day-FM had front row tickets to a show, so they awarded golf balls on social media and dropped them from a helicopter.
The Wolf in Seattle had front row tickets to Kenny Chesney, so they did The Running Of The Balls and interns with leaf blowers blew numbered beach balls across a field. First to cross a line, won.
Hot 101.5 in Norfolk did it with balls rolled down a hill for concert tickets.
KDWB through 101 numbers balls down a flight of stairs for Britney tickets.
WiLD in Tampa was the first station to do Musical Chairs for the Grammys. This was Hot 107.9 in Ft. Wayne's version.
Magic in Colorado Springs awarded a car with Musical Cars. Same concept except jumping in open cars.
Sarah Pepper at Hot 95.7 in Houston sky dove into a field of grids. If she landed in your assigned grid, you won.
Q-104 in Halifax had a trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame so all of the qualifiers lined up around the third floor balcony overlooking a foodcourt at a mall. There was a target on the ground and on cue, listeners started throwing paper airplanes at it. Land on the target and fly to Cleveland.
Several stations including Newcap in Edmonton and Hot in Mankato have awarded grand prizes with "Closest To The Pinhead". A morning guy, padded up, with listeners driving golf balls at him. The video on this is a little shaky but you get the idea.
KOB-FM in Albuquerque had a trip to see Green Day so they did Green Day & Ham: pig races. Winning pig won for its listener.
You can overthink prizes. A turkey the day before Thanksgiving? A great prize. So they did turkey races at KLUC in Las Vegas with a pile of paper turkeys and a leaf blower in the hallways of the station.
Or, put it in the VIP Club.
