Moved
I've moved stations in Minneapolis and San Francisco and it's a serious pain. Leighton in Grand Forks relocated from their hovel in Thompson a short distance across the parking lot to a brand new spanking building that still has that new car smell. It's arguably one of the nicer facilities I've been to. Teresa Mayer was running the opp and made sure to leave the old building with some panache.
BTW: you have to love a cluster where there's beer in the frig and it's not uncommon for staff to sit around after work, have one and bond.
Heat
Heatwaves are like any kind of weather extreme; a chance to do something that gets you some press. But you need to think outside of social media and a topic on the morning show. You need to think visually. Like using chiropractic skeletons as your snow gauge. Or freezing tshirts.
Or baking cookies in a car. http://www.kare11.com/story/weather/2015/06/22/phoenix-news-crew-bakes-cookies-in-a-hot-car/29119255
A Textable School Spirit Contest
There are two times to do a School Spirit Contest. September and January. When the kids are back and refreshed. Russ Allen offers this twist to High School Survivor. Power in Miami, Hot in Houston and NOU in Indy have done versions of this. In Indianapolis, it was to win Justin Bieber (on the cusp of stardom) as your principal for a day. They got over 900 texts. Wait. Correction. Over 4 millions texts. That would be more.
Will It Melt?
Still lots of warm weather awaits us.
Clay with The Wolf in Greensboro called me one morning. He was sitting on the (seemingly) four last pairs of tickets to tonight's Toby Keith show. The bit we came up with? "Will It Melt?"
During the first break of PM drive you go to the Sales cubes and steal five items. A bobblehead. A candyheart from Valentines. Whatever.
You then take one caller for each item and they need to say whether it will melt in the next four hours. You take the items, lay them on the sidewalk in front of the station and report on their status throughout the show. Bobblehead is getting soft but not melting. Candyheart? A puddle.
If the callers were correct, they get the prizes that are being offered.
