Have A Ball At Rod Stewart
Radio People have become so desensitized to meeting artists that we have totally lost touch with the audience. I saw a station do "click and register" to meet Taylor Swift, which is a million dollar prize.
Magic in Birmingham had backstage passes to meet Rod Stewart so they opened up the phones, took a couple of hundred names, assigned them all balls and tossed them down the stairs. http://www.magic96.com/onair/rob-dana-52160/have-a-ball-with-rod-stewart-13766188
On a completely Rod-note, K-Rock in St. Johns became K-Rod and kicked the living crap out of their competitors. Like, an ugly beat-down.
Free Willy
Came up not once but twice today. In a vibrant economy like this, getting on the air and begging for canned food is going to be really successful. Or not. You need a premise and a storyline.
The "hold the turkey hostage and threaten to kill it the night before Thanksgiving" bit is the biggest and best food drive every time it gets done.
TV can film it. There's a plot. There's suspense. There's conflict and resolution.
Wanna know about Batman? Ask Mark Adams. Wanna know how to keep a turkey alive, transport it and create a Radio Movie? Ask me at paigenienaber@gmail.com
An Audio Fugitive
Wired in Philly did this one day. For no reason other then they could. This was back when people didn't over-think stuff.
There was a mystery person on the streets of Philadelphia with a live mike in his pocket. Find him and win. They "turned him up" every ten minutes or so all day long. You listened for specific sounds (like a Duck being driven by a Ben Franklin tour guide) to help you narrow it down to a specific area.
It's the Secret Sound + The Fugitive. On crack.
Campus Craze
There are markets where the local university is a big player in the lifestyle of community. Minneapolis is a great example. KZIA regularly does Move-In Day where the entire staff is at UI greeting students and their families and helping them move in to the dorms. Wild in Tampa? Actually relocated the night show to campus housing for a few weeks and did the show from there.
The Beat in Vancouver has one of the better street teams in Radio. They do something called Campus Craze where they flood the university with activities and events during the first week school is back. And they sell it. Lots of Campus Invasion and Storm The Dorms happening this week.
The new thing, as of a year ago? Doorhangers. You hand them out to the kids. Ask nicely at paigenienaber@gmail.com and I'll get you an example.
