Play For View
Radio does contests. I like Games. Monty Hall played Games. Occasional zonk which means the winners are bigger, more exciting and less expected.
Trips are great prizes. They're usually money-can't-buy prizes like going to sit in a soundcheck with Bruno Mars in Vegas. Or what K-Rock in Kingston did with ""Two Tickets To Paradise": a winner and guest won a trip anywhere in the world. Which is better sounding then "a $10,000 travel voucher", which is what it was.
Trips as an umbrella promotion are always big. January Jetaways. Trip A Day. KOB-FM in Albuquerque did a weekly Fall Fantasy Flyaway and the digital stats were staggering. And they were brilliant in that they started with Flyaway #7.
Most radio stations will post a wacky photo of a plane as the logo for the contest.
Go to airline or hotel or travel websites: no goofy cartoon photo of a plane. Lots and lots of extremely great quality photos of cool destinations. Because they want to hook ya.
If you HAD a weekly trip in January, what if you did Play For View? A big colorful photo of the waves pounding the beach on Cayman. That's what we're playing for this week. Next week? A shot of a couple in the midst of a packed dance floor: Vegas.
A Visual For Your Drive
DJ's sitting at a table in a mall begging for donations is not the visual that Bob from News Center 5 is going to be ecstatic about. He's going to want something a little more show bizzy. One of the stations in the Twin Cities had a 5000 person choir at Mall Of America for the culmination of a 'thon and it got coverage on all the affiliates.
Here's the deal: every highschool choir in the Twin Cities has practiced and learned a bunch(tm) of carols. Invite them all down. Bing. Bang. Boom.
Or do what Lite in Poughkeepsie has done and have the cast of a local theater company come in and do a live performance of "It's A Wonderful Life."
Hair: The Press Universal
All you need to do is watch enough evening news and you will see some school principal getting their head shaved because all of their students hit their reading goals.
Sarah Pepper at Hot in Houston? Hit her goal of $50,000 for leukemia research and bzzzz went the clippers.
And John and Tammy at KSON in San Diego broke out the shears for their St. Jude event:
John & Tammy did it again last year after a company stepped forward to match $10,000 in donations for the Kids of St. Jude - so they got matching mohawk and got on TV woohoo!
It was a milestone Radiothon since we can say after all these years, KSON Listeners have donated over $10 MILLION to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital!
