School/Business Closings
Our church cancelled services last month for the first time ever because of weather. Minister actually spun out and was injured in a car wreck. The church sent an email to everyone at 8:40 announcing the cancellation. Which is pretty high tech for a small town Lutheran church in Minnesota.
Back in the day we were the only FM in the Twin Cities that did school and business closings. The option was 'CCO or someone who played music (us). Our numbers in months where there were blizzards exploded.
Ton of work. Letter went out to every school (130 high schools alone) with a code word and a number to a line at the station. Letters also to 1900 office managers through the Twin Cities Business Association. In the schools there were posters (sponsored by Campbells Soup) in all the lunchrooms informing the kids that on snow days, to listen to 99.5 WLOL. Offices told their staff through memos to listen to us. When we knew there was going to be a storm, I got interns, frozen pizzas, beer and we camped at the station for up to three days answering the phones and stealing closings off the NBC affiliate.
Good times.
KRST in Albuquerque is one of the first station's I've seen to take it to the text level. (Pause while you appreciate my play on words)(Okay). Text "DELAY" to 68255 and get updated texts like
APS 1 HR LATE. INTEL ON SNO SKED. HOPE CHRISTIAN CLOSED.
What would be better but way more labor intensive would be if each school had a keyword, like, maybe their mascot and they could get specific info. In the Twin Cities, you'll have some suburbs cancelling and others not. Again, a lot of work but it's the kind of thing that can keep us relevant.
