Snowfies
Back during a Winter storm in December I'd lobbed out "have listeners go outside and take pictures of themselves dorking around in the snow".
With one of the recent minor weather occurrences that affected a small portion of the Northeast, comes this from Adam McClaren at XL-96 in Moncton:
Our promo came to life last night after hours when we realized we had an extra pair of tickets to see XL artist Chad Brownlee's concert. Wrote a quick promo, got it voiced late in the night by the best VO guy for flexibility, Dave Steele, produced it at home and sent it to the mornings guys to overwrite another promo we didn't make promises to air. Our very simple #XLSnowSelfie generated probably about 100 pictures between instagram, twitter & Facebook. We did the #XLSelfieSummer in 2014 so this concept is familiar to our listeners. Send a pic, you're entered into the contest. If you're interested in the results, take a quick peek at #XLSnowSelfie on Instagram and see our happy listeners! Some of the pics towards the end became "who can wear less outside while looking casual" It was a fun thing to talk about when we got to the point of having no new storm updates
Stations With Characters
There are so many analogies between Radio and TV that we just miss. Great TV shows obviously have memorable defined characters. Most radio stations don't think beyond talent when it comes to characters.
Great sitcoms have secondary characters like "Newman" or "Janice" who were one-shot appearances and tested well in the research so they brought them back. Somewhere a morning show is about to have an insane grandma.
Imaging can have great characters like Anthony Destasio, the station janitor at KDWB. Arty Shenkman, a ticket broker at Mix in Springfield or Craven Morehead who for years gave 102 Jamz/Orlando's contests a "premise" by his presence in the imaging.
As exciting as giving away gas can be, having Sir Tanks-A-Lot out at street corners in San Diego took it to a whole new level.
The dancing twirling Gas Man at Kiss/Boise's gas station takeover was so great that when it was over, a TV reporter came over and thanked the station for giving him such a great visual for his story.
And if KNIX in Phoenix had sent DJ's in a polo shirts down to Super Bowl press day, no one would have cared. So Barrel Boy made a pop-in and stole the event.
