Don't Do This
I was driving into Kansas City for my niece's highschool graduation. It was a Friday afternoon and as I neared KC, I began to scan the airwaves for something fun to listen to. Paused for a moment on a station where they were doing the final event in what must have been a long process of qualifying people to win a car. They had a dial position number of qualifiers, and as I sped south on I-35, they began one-by-one, the process of them stepping into the car and turning a key. It was excruciating. After maybe the fifth "Hi, what's your name and where're you from?" "I'm Debby Wilson from Olathe." "Great Debby. Now take a seat in the car and try your key." Followed by ten to fifteen seconds of crowd noise and various other background SFX before you hear a barely discernable "aw..." from the bystanders. Then, "Okay, now what's your name and where're you from..."
I stuck in a CD, listened to a few songs, came back and, anyone?, Buehler?, they were still doing this. Bopped around the dial, listened to some other stations, tuned back in and they were on contestant #63. You get the idea.
Never do these things live.
A Very Dirty Mid-Days Bit
If you think about it (and why aren't you thinking about it. Worrying about it. Obsessing about it. Like me. Now. Sitting in a hotel room. I can't stop thinking about it. God please just make these voices stop...but I digress) the middays are our promotional wasteland. ALL these people, sitting at work, listening to the Radio and we pretty much just play music and do exciting features like The At-Work Network and Office Of The Day.
And if you think about it some more, blogging is just high-tech watercooler talk. Blogging is gossip. And people love gossip. Doubt me? Go to a fitness club or coffee shop and look at what 18-49 Women are reading.
What if you did some Office Dirt? Anonymously of course. But every week some anonymous listener (all guys should be "Bob" and all women should be "Susan") wins for dishing up some at-work dirt.
The only caveat (Not just a college word but a FRENCH college word) is that you need to be very very vague. Don't get into specifics about names or places of work. Don't say "We got an e-mail that JJ Paone at WLLD over in St. Pete loves to touch interns in the prize closet." That will get you sued and besides, that's old news.
"This weeks winning dirt comes from Susan who says she has a co-worker who has really really bad gas and tries to cover it up by putting on lots of hand moisturizer and then holding her hand in front of a fan on her desk." True story by the way.
Gossip is big. Office gossip is bigger. And who better to know that then people in freakin' Radio.
