Possibly The Best Summer Umbrella Of 2016
And further proof that Iowans need better dance instructors. From Barry O'Donnell with iHeart in Poughkeepsie and snapped up by KZIA: Make Summer Great Again.
Gas Wars
We sometimes forget that stuff like an artist meet and greet is a money-can't-buy, never-in-a-lifetime prize for most listeners. A couple of years ago one of the CBS stations did a "Click And Register" to meet 1D. This is a good prize. Less than 200 people did. By anyone's criteria, this is not the kind of thing you get smiley faces on your report card for.
Q in Memphis had the same prize and offered it up to the gas station that would sell gas for the cheapest price for 107 minutes. Now, chain gas stations can't do this. But mom and pop indies? Absolutely. And if I ran Paige's Pump & Munch out on Route W in Chaska, and being the father of two pre-teen girls, this is something that would make me Dad For Life. They opened up bids and the gas station that came in at the lowest (I think it was like 23 cents) got the passes. I saw this done in Minny and they got it down to negative ten cents a gallon and shut down a huge section of the metro area. Plus, these always always get TV coverage.
VIP Club vs. Live shots on three affiliates. Tough call.
DMV Make Overs
A bad drivers license photo is something that will stick with you for years, so, a few years back, KZIA sent promo staff down to the DMV to give people's hair and make up quick touchups before they went in front of the camera. The woman who takes this daily email and loads it into cliftonclient.com had a Hair Wall and half closed eyes for about ten years and had a tremendous sense of humor about it.
Show Us Your (Logo)
This is so old school and so great. I mean, why wouldn't you want to flood a festival with people marketing your station? www.froggy929.com/show-us-your-froggy
This is also a great reminder, and one that Hubbard in Minneapolis/St. Paul knows, that there are events like this where you can sell just a staggering amount of swag. And unless you're a subversive anarchist socialist vegan, this is never a bad thing.
