The Epitome Of "Local"
I've listened to morning shows that without the TOH you couldn't tell where they were. Websites? Please. One station I actually had to Google "Temecula" because the station site was absolutely devoid of anything that could suggest where they were. I finally went under "Contacts".
Worse? Morning shows who don't know the market. Say what you want about Mancow but he learned the Bay Area in a weekend. He knew the terms, the hot buttons, what to say, what to reference. So when he launched it sounded like he'd been there for years. When Dave Ryan added a cohost a few years ago, they had the audience pick ten things for her to do to be accepted. Stuff like going to a meat raffle, eat "hot dish" in a Lutheran Church basement, stand in the nets and have players take slapshots on her...your basic Minnesota things. It was genius.
Every market or region has its own vernacular. You need to have lived in the Carolinas or Alabama or "get" this. But, they nailed it.
That's a potential morning show feature because EVERY market has their own lingo. Detroit has their own inflections. Miami has Spanglish. In Minnesota we end sentences "up" so they all sound like questions. We also say "seen" instead of "saw". And "borrowed" instead of "loaned" or "lent", ie: I borrowed Dave my VHS of 'Privates On Parade'.
Kind of like what Loren and Wally have done at WROR in Boston with How To Speak Bostonese www.wror.com
Principal For A Day
From today's College Of Musical Knowledge(tm), one of the first-ever school spirit contests was with Trident gum and the school that sent in the most wrappers won Hall & Oates.
There have been every kind of similar contest. Pennies From Heaven (WPXY/Rochester, Q-102/Cincy, KUBE /Seattle and KDWB/Minny), Last School Standing (Hot in Houston among others) and then the muther of them all: Principal For A Day, the brainchild of Rayne at AMP in Detroit. Early in Beeb's career, his station in Indy pulled 3,000,000 texts to win the artist as your school's principal. It wasn't an appearance: he ran the school for a day.
It was just done by Power in Miami, NOW in SFO and Wild in Tampa for a Nick Cannon "experience". And it was huge.
Delete Your Debt
Also done by stations like Power 96 in Miami and Hot 98.1 in Greenville as Beat The Bank.
One of the stations realized that Pay Your Bills hadn't been done in their market but commented that most PYB is kind of boring. For the 93% of people sitting through it, there's no entertainment value to:
- Paige Nienaber! You have nine minutes and two seconds to call back.
- Hi, this is Paige!
- Congrats Paige, we're paying your bills
- Thanks Bob!
Does this work? Absolutely. Could it be more fun? Absolutely.
Delete Your Debt is the same thing but when Paige calls in we've hacked into my credit card companies mainframe and as long as I feel lucky, we delete items like Ferris Bueller changing grades. You bail and get all that stuff paid for OR you get zonked and lose it all with the computer security cutting the connection.
