Game Of Thrones
I think we have enough challenges without telling people to turn off the radio and go and watch TV, which is why the GM at CBS in Sacramento kyboshed "Watch & Win" contests unless they had some kind of bounceback to the station that required them to at LEAST call the morning show. Or to write in shorter sentences.
(And by the way, "Watch & Wins" are never for shows that are actually good. They're for programs like "Homeboys In Outer Space" that are on life support.)
One of the things I'll ask morning shows is "So, what is the TV show that is hands-down #1 with your audience?" Because that can be a good starting point for creating something. At WPGC a few years back it was ""Scandal". Cool. They created a morning show video series based on the (faux) scandalous happenings in the station.
So Rob & Joss at Froggy in Santa Rosa are getting prepped for "Game Of Thrones" and are dreading it because they know nothing about it due to having never watched it. Tonight? They're bringing some food to a listeners' home and will be getting a crash course tutorial in the show.
It's kind of like the TV version of Kate University in Boise where she would once-a-month go out and tackle something new with some listeners who'd also never done it.
And it's really just a great excuse to hang out with listeners.
Game Of Scones
In about 1990 there was a morning show bit that you'd see happening in a lot of markets called The Cosby Sweater Game. The morning show would take callers and they'd have to guess the pattern, style or color of the first sweater he's wearing in that night's episode. Get it right and win.
I saw it done with "COPS" and having to guess the minute/second into the Saturday episode that someone would not be wearing a shirt. A listener won donuts for making the prediction.
I don't know what would be "the" cliché for G.O.T. but doing the timed contest with scones from a client might be a good way to acknowledge a phenom program for your audience.
Game Of Cards
I can't think of many of you that don't have at least one casino client.
One of the things that Las Vegas has done for decades is to offer free gambling clinics to newbies. Some snacks. Some soft drinks and a nice, quiet room where a dealer will walk them through each of the table games. The theory? People are more likely to hit the ATM if they feel at least a little confidence in their knowledge of the game.
You have a casino that "wants something"? Bing. Newbie Night.
