An Annual Reminder
We don't want clients bringing their new food item to the station for the talent to eat on the air. If they want sampling, great. Bring it to a workplace as part of a campaign to get out and into the offices and have them eat it. And during your obligatory call-in from The Office Invasion, have Debbie from HR talk about how great the new Wendy's vegan salmon burger is.
Hot Water
Greg Runyon, 3rd shift DJ at Dancers Ranch suggests maybe this is the next version of sticking a jock in a hot car to show the risks of that. http://www.msn.com/en-us/health/healthtrending/firefighters-are-warning-people-to-never-leave-bottled-water-in-your-car/ar-AAqcjrM?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp
NSFM (Not Safe For Mornings)
And obviously, as a Mennonite youth pastor, I'm deeply troubled by this. https://www.facebook.com/KS95FM/videos/10155782379563013/
Taco Bell
They like big things. Like promotions that will give everyone in a metro area of two million a free taco if a DJ hits a free throw. Or bank vault dashes. Or DJ's parachuting into grids.
So what if you did "Brrr.....itos"? Establish what would be a really cold temp for your market (like 66 below in Scandia) and when it hits that low, go to TB and get a free burrito for a dial position number of minutes. Much like what KLUC in Las Vegas has done with Wet & Wild when the temp hit 110.
As much as I dislike giving away food on the air, Taco Tag could be a contest, but it's got to be something like food for you and your family or a sack to bring back for your co-workers. Know the name of the previous winner, and win, and so on and so forth and what have you.
Five Contests That You May Have Never Heard Of Or Forgotten About
Radio is pretty good at rediscovering old methodologies so here are a few things that might not be on the radar as you creep through September.
Cash/Ticket Blast I would guess that Power 96 in Miami probably created half of the contests that are in use by Radio. But perhaps the biggest, the one that really broke the phones, was Cash Blast. It was the simplest contest ever. When the Song Of The Day played each day, they would open the phones and everyone who got through in 20 minutes won $100. They would breathlessly name three or four winners after every song. It sounded like they took 50 winners. But they would take 10-12.
KDWB did this as Ticket Blast with one of their shows and KAJA in San Antonio did it when God gifted them with 300 pairs of tickets to a sold out George Jones stadium show.
The other way to do it is call it a Pool Party, ie: you have one pair of Taylor tickets a day. You do the same thing at three or four appointment times and just take names as quickly as you can. "Jump in the pool with Taylor Swift. All you have to do is get through on the studio line during a 20 minute time frame and have us answer the phone." That seems plausible. That seems realistic and possible to achieve. Pull one name at 5 o'clock.
Flying (Insert Theme) I was bored and at a car dealer remote in Charlotte and JFTFOI we took a pair of New Kids tickets, stole a bouquet of helium balloons off a car antenna , tied the tickets to it, let them go and announced that somewhere over the Queen City was a pair of soldout Kids tickets. It. Was. Mayhem. But in a good way. We later tried it with a t-shirt. People still went crazy trying to track and recover it.
Since then V in Atlanta did it with 103 paper turkeys the day before Thanksgiving, ditto with Hot 97.1 in Houston and one of the CHR's did it with little paper bats for Twilight tickets. And Cat Country in Atlantic City just did it 107 balloons with cats under them. The first person to recover one, snap and post the shot got to meet Rascal Flatts.
Gold Digger In the US, Beat The Bomb is as synonymous with the brands at KLAX in LA, Power in Miami and Hot in Greenville as french fries are to McDonalds. We've also done the methodology with stealing concert tickets from a promoters computer (Minneapolis) and stealing gas from Brad Paisley's tour bus (Phoenix). If you're Beat out, then the Canadian version from Toronto and Vancouver is Gold Digger. Killer name.
Gone In Sixty Seconds A great car contest from up north. You win a key by registering on-line and then listening for your name. If they read your name that means....they're parked out front and you have 60 seconds to run outside and tag the car to get a key before they speed away.
Match Game This is kind of off-the-radar and hasn't been done in most markets for quite some time. Print a 64 square grid off the site and listen and track the guesses as people try to match squares, winning whatever is "behind" them. Varying amounts of cash and good prizes from clients. And because great game shows had zonks, two panels should have a picture of a car ashtray and the winner gets whatever spare change the morning guy has in his ashtray.
