The Kerry Brown Theory Of 6th Grade Buzz
The station in Miami was going to launch bus boards and wanted buzz.
So I told them that when I was in 6th grade, Kerry Brown dictated trends. She was the one who stole "Go Ask Alice" from an older sib and passed it around: it was pretty scandalous. So, one day she came in and said that in the Sears catalogue men's underwear section you could kind of see one of the guys (male genitalia) by accident. So of course we all went home to see. It was in black and white. You saw what you wanted to see.
So...we staged a ton of calls and social media posts from people asking "Uh, was that intentional or did someone at the advertising agency miss it because...I can kinda see....you know...." Some guy talked about how he was changing his tire and a bus pulled up and if you looked at the bus board kind of upside down, well, "It's RIGHT THERE."
People all over south Florida were standing on their heads and staring at these things and the transit company was getting complaints.
Not Recommended
From Trevor Wallworth at Q in Halifax:
Q104's outdoor campaign is using the self-deprecating slogan "Not Recommended" that looks like a rubber stamp or sticker placed over the morning crew image. A few weeks back we aired a caller who thought the posters had been vandalized with a "Not Recommended" sticker.
Since then we are receiving regular calls and emails from listeners who are spotting Bus Shelter Ads and following up the vandalism notion.
On air we're not letting on that it's actually part of the poster and respond by saying "thanks for the info. We'll let bus shelter people know".
