TSO
Had one of those "drifting thoughts in church" thoughts on Sunday. The Trans Siberian Orchestra song is great, dramatic...and without lyrics. A morning show co-host with mad vocal skillz is going to do at least a couple of versions of it, inserting lyrics from "Hippopotamus For Christmas", "Santa Baby" and maybe even "Dear Mr. Jesus". Kind of like Scary Poppins on youtube; just some subtle shifts in tone and pacing and it'll take on a new meaning.
"So, When Are You Going To Get Married And Settle Down?"
If you have a female co-host who "gets that" at every family gathering, then do a pool. Have the audience predict how long into her visit home will she be asked that. She shoots a vid of her in her car, in the driveway, starting a stop watch. And then her clicking it when she gets asked. Person closest to the exact elapsed time, without going over, wins.
The Stuff That Sirius Can't Do
There are going to be opportunities this coming month that will, if not "drop in your lap", just invole pursuing them. Keep your eyes open because this is the stuff that actually matters. From Jackson Spade at MWC in Fargo:
"The Playhouse had one of the most organic community events I've ever seen. Long story short, we got a Facebook message from a listener asking if we could encourage people to put Christmas lights up super early because her mother was at the end stages of Cancer and may not make it to Christmas. Her last wish was to see the Christmas lights one last time. The Playhouse took the ball and sprinted with it!
In 48 hours they lined up a limo, carolers, flowers, hell, even Santa showed up to surprise this mother and daughter. Unfortunately the woman passed away the morning they were going to surprise her. Her daughter still wanted to proceed with the event and when The Playhouse showed up to her house they were greeted by the entire neighborhood, the West Fargo Police and Fire Dept. escorted the caravan as the limo led the way so this woman who's mother just passed away could see the lights that the community put up. Incredibly powerful event. News crews covered it, it was plastered all over social media.
I like the events that you can plan, but when you can reach the community in that way, when it comes together naturally. That's what makes radio awesome, right?"
