"What can we do this week that will really cut through and get us noticed?" - OM for a very large, very #1 station.
When Daddy Met Mommy
"Write in and tell us why your mom deserves (prize from client)" has some years on it. But just like with Valentines and helping people pull off amazing surprise engagements, stories about how parents met can be funny and/or heart warming. My friend (deleted by his lawyer) met his wife at a university free clinic where she also was experiencing painful urination. They had something in common, but there is a whole different story that they told their kids. My mom? Was a hottie. My dad? Clever. She lived up the street in St. Paul and would walk past his house to get the city bus to work. So...he blocked the sidewalk with his car and started washing it when she headed down the street. She had to walk around him, he apologized, she asked about his cool new car, buh bing.
This is one of those methodologies that you could stick any client prize into for Fathers Day.
#splashtag
This came up because of a Pepsi request but it could also be a ticket giveaway for a local waterpark. Share a hashtagged photo of you enjoying the summer on a beach, at the pool, running through a sprinkler and random posts will get rewarded with tickets.
KLUC in Las Vegas, had for a long time, a plug-in-and-broadcast set-up at Wet & Wild, a local waterpark where actual locals would go to. On days that were especially torrid, the station would just relocate there and do everything live from there. Why? Why not?
The Second Chance Summer
A station-that-must-remain-nameless has the op to score scads(tm) of tickets to lots of shows like Def Leppard, Chicago, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Pat Benatar and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The concept to tie them all together? The Second Chance Summer. Call in and tell how you had tickets to Motley Crue in 1987 but your dad grounded you for mowing over a rock and breaking his Toro.
Fabulous Life
That's the Summer focus at one of the stations. It's taking basic promotional ops that drop in their laps, like concerts and celebrity visits, and tweaking them with limo and shopping and other accoutrement so it's a money-can't-buy prize for a winner.
Fashion/Fashoff
One of the stations has a clothing store that wants something for back to school.
Ryan was a young woman who was the first real Street Teamer at Wild in Tampa. She was the Fashion Coordinator for the station. She took the GM's credit card and bought clothes so the airstaff did not look like idiots when they were out in public. (She later got wasted and lost bowel control in a limo at a concert. She never returned.)
What if you did a version of Hot 89.9's Party Girl and had a very hip intern or street teamer be your critic. Updated webinars on what is hitting fashion-wise and what is now passe'. Could be done for the summer. Most definitely for BTS.
