High School Year Books
Last weekend appeared to be the weekend that everyone posted grad shots on social media. 'Tis the season. So, whatever could you do with the trend?
- Have the morning show bring in their old yearbooks and read things that people wrote. Have the listeners guess whose 'book it was.
- We all had things that idiot friends wrote that we hoped our parents might not stumble on and we would have to explain. Joss from Froggy in Santa Rosa suggested having the GM read your yearbooks with an emphasis on references to skipping and nookie.
Your Lottery
State lotteries are good at coming up with seasonal scratchers. A station-to-remain-nameless has been approached by their lottery with scads(tm) of tickets for some summer themed contest. My suggestion was that you continually remind the audience that whenever the temp breaks the dial position, you'll open up the phones and blow the suckers out. One of the Vegas stations did that with tickets to the AAA ballclub several years back. Always a great and topical methodology.
Summer Scorecard 2018
First, welcome to Summer. Which is a reminder that you're audience doesn't recognize seasons based on their calendar start-end-dates. When it snows, it's Winter. When the snow melts, it's Spring. Canada Day and Memorial Day are the starts of Summer.
I'm not going to get into Programming or signal strength (they were screwed) but during the 9 years that B-96 was around in some way, shape or form, KDWB beat them promotionally. Which isn't to say that B was lax. They were actually pretty competitive in some areas. And where they lacked, they talked a good game. I'm not sure if they were on the streets as much as they said they were but they sounded like they were out at three or four lakes every day. It was kind of frustrating.
So, for the Summer of 2010, the KDWB Marketing Director and I put up a list of every "thing" that they would either be at or they would find a way to acknowledge. We based the list on previous Summers and I think we got it pretty well. They weren't AT the Chisago County Fair but they were on the fairgound crowd announcements and showed up at least once if only to play some music.
The goal was to do a head-to-head comparison of who "won" each of these things. Who had the best set-up at Taste Of Minnesota. Who had the best campaign for high school football. Who had the biggest crowd in front of their booth at the State Fair. It was subjective and partisan but in theory on September 9th, whoever had the most ticks in their column won the Summer. And why wouldn't you want to win the Summer?
This is a great exercise for your station, in your market, with your competition, this Summer. Maybe there are no fairs (it's a real Minneapolis kind of thing) but it could be something like Saturdays on the river or the farmers market (KZIA) or the big fireworks that are not sponsored by any one group.
Do it and tick away.
