Battle Of The Bits
Maybe it was the shots of Fireball that people were slamming before making their presentations but it seemed like a particularly good year for ideas at Morning Show Bootcamp. I was on the judging panel with talent like Karson from Mix in Boston, Fitz from Seattle and Spencer Graves from The Arch in St. Louis.
It's definitely a "you had to be there" to get the vibe of the ideas and a two sentence description can come off as flat, but here are some of the bits that were floated.
Lawrence Ryan A fake persona for one of the talent who writes faux Yelp reviews.
Murder Monday On ZPL in Indy where it's become their most popular podcast and pulls ridiculous numbers. https://radionowindy.com/category/the-joe-and-alex-show/murder-monday/
Whack Wrap From Sunny in Tampa. I think you needed to see this woman rap children's books like "Goodnight Moon" to Hip Hop songs to truly get the beauty of it. She got a standing O.
Real Life Or Cosmo From a morning guy who was questioning the authenticity of letters to the advice columnist in women's magazines. He reads one of the bizarre scenarios, opens up the phones and fields a dozen calls from listeners who are actually dealing with their navel becoming untied after 48 years.
Horribly Blunt Obits A weekly photo post of an obit they found where the decedent or their family left nothing in question.
Celebrity Obit Look-A-Likes They lob out someone like "James Van Derbeek" and award a prize to the first listener to call in and name the person in that day's obits who look like him.
What The Heck Is Anna Saying She has a food allergy and marshmallows make her salivary gland kick into overdrive, so....she'll stuff her mouth, begin drooling like Niagara Falls and try to say a phrase. ID it to win.
Watch Yourself Be Born They surprised a listener at work and played a video of them being born for them and all their coworkers.
Where Were You Conceived An awkward pairing of a listener and their parent who goes into uncomfortable detail about that drunken afternoon in the prize closet.
Summer Jobs Each of the people on the show took one week summer jobs and documented being an ice cream sales man or asst. lifeguard.
Husband Test A woman is conferenced with her husband and asks him a basic household management question, like, "Do you know where the shelfpaper is for the kitchen?" If he knows, they win.
Tell Us How You Were Shot Or Stabbed Apparently quite a few of these stories are funny and there doesn't seem to be a lack of them in the audience.
Mind Reader The morning show uses the Akinaror app to guess what the host is thinking. https://en.akinator.com/
Run Away Bride Cohost got a used wedding dress, miked and Go Pro'ed herself as she hitchhiked and appeared to be fleeing town.
The Real Side Pieces Of (Market) They open up the phones and let these people share their drama.
Dog Tooth Brush Roulette Three pairs of numbered toothbrushes and one is chosen and video'ed as it is used on a dog after a long day od=f self-grooming and eating dead stuff in the backyard. The number is not revealed until all three members of the morning show have chosen a toothbrush and used it.
The "Whack Rap" won second. Third went to this amazingly genuine cohost who regularly reads from the hundreds of letters she wrote to Santa as a kid. (You had to be there). And the winner of $500 went to the morning show from 'PEG in Charlotte for "Earn Your Black Card". They throw three questions like "Name three things Black people are afraid of" or "Name three ghetto nicknames" at a caller. They lose their Black Card if they don't get two out of three.
