It's The Most One-Dimensional Time Of The Year
I was on an Alpha call and Scott Mahalick was really emphasizing to NOT have just a big barren week of nothingness between Christmas and New Years...which IS the basic vibe on many many stations.
Promotions is not the Art of Giving Stuff Away. Promotions is the Art of Content Between The Songs. Just have something to talk about or plug or tease or push or sell or (insert verb).
And then you have New Years which basically stopped evolving in 1971 when Rockin' Rick Richards at the Might 610, KDIA/Duluth spun 45's at The Schooner over in Superior: and the New Years Club gig was created. If you addressed even TWO of these, you will win.
What The Flock?!
Deaner and Daniels at KGGI in Riverside once flocked themselves. I'm not sure why. Wouldn't it be fun(tm) if you flocked random items that were stolen from sales people's cube and listeners had to ID the pic on social media to win TSO or whatever holiday prize you might have?
The Closet Of Misfit Prizes
KOB-FM in Albuquerque was the first station to do a December promotion based on "misfit toys" or "We couldn't get you the PS3 but here is (something simply not as good)." Kiss in Dallas did a December version of cleaning out all of the old un-picked up prizes from the previous 12 months. Bing. There's your theme. But the promo HAS to mirror the song from the Christmas program.
"Save Our Season"
A throw-back idea from the always very cool BRMB-FM in Birmingham England. This could be so large if done right:
The Breakfast Show, Foxy & Giuliano, were set the challenge of 'Saving Christmas Spirit' in Birmingham. They had 3 weeks to prove that Christmas spirit was still strong in Birmingham (it all tied in to a client's 'Save Our Spirit' campaign so was making us money too). The solution to create a Christmas song composed, written and performed by Birmingham. We took over a shop unit in the main shopping centre and turned it into an audition booth and had people audition and their audition tapes were uploaded to our website. Then we shortlisted around 40 local people to come and feature on the song that Foxy & Giuliano had been writing. Great content with F&G also getting singing lessons and going to dance classes... Yesterday we unveiled the song to Birmingham and it's available for download with proceeds going to a local children's hospice. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/brummie-christmas-spirit/id407949635 -
