This is the last Check-Up until 2019, so thank you to Joel Denver and Nick Wagner at All Access for allowing me to have this cool forum, and thank you for reading it. Merry merry.
God Bless The Silly People
Using $10,000 from a client, a morning guy in Australia created a cashnado and made it literally rain money on the people of Brisbane. https://radioinfo.com.au/news/raining-money-brisbane-hit105s-stav-davidson-jumps-plane
Ice Cycles
A few of the stations have used bikes as their focus when it comes to "drives" in December. Because, honestly, it's a great gift for an under privileged kid.
So, jewelers are coming out the woodwork for the holidays. One of them was pushing hard for a charity tie in. What if you had a diamond up for grabs for one of the people who donate a bike? You'd need a secondary way to enter to get around lottery rules but it's a nice hook.
The Twelve Days Of Textmas
At LEAST five possible ways to do it:
- One is the classic pyramid scheme. One prize on day one and twelve prizes on day twelve. Or, one winner on day one, twelve winners on day twelve.
- The lovely and incredibly-brighter-than-you-are (I'm not kidding, she's NASA material) Tessa Hall had a suggestion. I've seen this done for Secretaries Day. Maybe you have people text back Christmas carols. Name a song and the first person to type in the lyrics correctly and shoot them back, wins. From Tessa: I think it'd be fun to do something with a contest that involves how fast you can text. Register random people through texting back keywords which are aired at specific times, then hold the grand prize showdown at some public place with a screen for all to see. Contestants copy phrases during the showdown. Whoever has the lightning fast (and correct) thumbs gets the grand prize.
- This violates every freaking Radio Rule that we believe we have to operate under; but Wild in Tampa was among the first stations to just take random callers and give them prizes. No geeky contesting. Just a "Hey, thanks for being a fan. Here's some tickets to (movie)." Could be done with texts sent in over 12 days.
- Or, do a Pee Wee Herman "Holiday Word Of The Day". Post it on Facebook at midnight. Whenever that word is used in "jock talk" the next day, text it in to win.
- Or, from Gino at Power 96 in Miami: How about keyword text - Text "Santa" we'll text you the exact time to listen to win...catch is you need to register for our text club
Radio Bloopers

A Christmas Episode
Dave & Jimmy at 'NCI regularly do a special "Christmas episode" which is not entirely a novel idea in TV: every show has their own holiday episode. http://screenertv.com/television/christmas-tv-cliches-arrow-psych-30-rock-popular/
What would be fun would be to go through that list and compile all the clichés so that your last show before Christmas features a child who's lost her belief in Santa, a special appearance by Melissa Joan Hart as 'Aunt Tammy' and the parents finally talking after twenty years.
Facebook Video
B-98.7 in Tampa has gone all Christmas and this video automatically launches when you go to their page. Facebook.com/b987fm
In a lot of markets there is a TV station that will just "run" a fireplace shot all December 25th (as kids anxiously await the hand to appear and place another log). Capital 96.3 in Edmonton has gone Christmas for their fifth season and Brent Shelton thought it might be fun to do the yule fire on their social media. The crackling is what makes it.
High School Choirs
If you can tap into groups like high school theater and choirs, they're pretty easy to activate and they're also a great resource for those moments when you need a lot of bodies and you need them quick.
Some stations like 'KIS in Miami have hosted marching band competitions. Jeff and Jenn at Q-102 in Cincinnati do an annual choir competition and it's annually massive. The cash prize is obviously a great hook, but the air play? Just as big. http://www.wkrq.com/contest/2018-jeff-jenn-christmas-choir-competition/
