"We Apologize"
It's the nuke. The Big One. The thing you drop when you want to activate the audience and drive ALL attention away from the competition. Kiss in Charlotte kind of did their own version of it last month. Without getting into the backstory, this is generally not the social media response when you post something about Sophia Turner's choice of licorice at baseball games. (351 "reactions", 260 comments and 30 shares). No one ever appreciates something as much as when they think that they've lost it. https://www.facebook.com/themrlshow/posts/2231516583602989
Virgins & Firsts
Mix in Boise had an AMAZING talent named Kate McGwire who created a campaign called "Kate University". It even had its own crest. Once a month she would go out and do something that she'd never done before, like skeet shooting or playing poker or bungie jumping or going to see male strippers, with a dozen of her listeners who had also never done that.
She is one of those jocks who you REALLY want the audience hanging out with. She's that nice.
It was done as "Theme Park Virgins" at the CHR here: a bunch of people who had somehow gone through life without ever going to an amusement park, joined the morning show for a free day at the local one.
It's surprising the stuff that people have never done. The Sales Asst at KSFM in Sacramento had never sat on Santa's lap at a mall because of something religious with her parents. It became a morning show bit the next day and over 30 adults FINALLY got their lapdance with the Big Guy.
Cassiday Cappelo, when she was in Charlotte, had never eaten at Burger King. So she did and treated a dozen listeners who had also never enjoyed BK.
What else? Swimming. Going to a baseball game. Singing Karaoke. Flying on a plane. Seeing an R rated movie (I know an adult who never has). Having a library card. Donating blood. Being on social media. Voting. Getting waxed. There's a ton too choose from and really, it's just an excuse to hang with the audience.
And then you have....
Do Overs
There are a lot of "Second Chance" promotions. "Second Chance At Romance" has been a great Valentines promotion for decades.
Who wouldn't want another shot at prom? Well, as evidenced by the gazillion(tm) stations that have done Second Chance Prom, quite a few.
At a lot of stations it kind of turned into a bad club gig. KRTR in Honolulu did it the best and had the jocks made up as teachers and chaperones, the punch was spiked and they had a Woodie (old school station wagon) as the photo opp where you could get your souvenir pic taken in the back seat.
NOW 96.1 in San Antonio did the The Prom Do Over https://961now.iheart.com/content/2019-05-11-prom-night-do-over-party-fairy-tale/
And Russell Rush contributes his own prom photo to the promo video which begs the question; did John Gacy have a son? https://www.facebook.com/961NOWsa/videos/10157115791052988/UzpfSTUxNTEwNDY4NToxMDE1NzI4MzUyODMzOTY4Ng/
What else could be a do over? Well, a wedding reception for one. Bob Saget's career got new life based on videos of these conflagrations.
A marriage could be another. Radio weddings always get press so why not play off someone's misfortune with their first one. One of my favorite AE's refers to her second marriage, now on year 19, as her "Do Over Marriage".
You could have a listener do over their graduation speech from 20 years ago that they flubbed up.
Do Over Do and fix a hair style that people have been giving a listener crap about for a decade. A former morning host-turned-flight attendant had one that looked like Mary Tyler Moore, but this was thankfully short-lived.
You could do over a first date from years and years ago that kiboshed a relationship because of the awfulness of it. I heard "First And Last Dates" as a topic and their phones blew up with people calling in...including me with the time a girl from my dorm and I were attacked by (seemingly) a thousand rats down by the mills at St. Anthony Main.
