"I Was Told That There Would Be No Math"
Clifton had a theory, and I saw it work over and over and over again, that if you launched a station or morning show and went out and shook hands with 25% of the people in the market in the first 90 days, you'd be #1. Wired in Philly didn't reach #1 but it beat Q-102 in the first 90's, and almost beat them in the first month. With one of the stations, they did the math and it meant they had to go out and personally greet 1377 people a day. That was their goal and they posted it all over the station.
So, if 4% of people are so motivated by our exciting contests that they'll pick up the phone and try to win $1000, what if you could bump your number up to 5%? It would be sadly historic.
You should take little post-it notes with "5%" on them and stick them all over the building because that's your goal. What do we need to get there? First, don't repeat all of the stuff that only gets us 4%, like boring contest names and boring imaging and no excitement, re: winners promos.
God Bless The Silly People(tm)
Traditionally, weekend contests have been one of our best opportunities to be topical and address what people are talking about, or something that's happening or trending. Some of the Dade County beaches were closed because of a "thing " in the water so Power 96 called an audible, took the contest off the air and did a Pool Crashing Weekend. Since everyone was going to be getting their water fix at their home or at a friend's pool, the station went and hit a different pool party all weekend. Boom. That was easy and they sounded "like" Miami on that weekend. There was a listeria outbreak in Milwaukee so Hot added adult diapers to the prizes they were doing that weekend. Ditto boom.
Unless you lived in a cave in Tora Bora (2002 metaphors are great) it would be hard to have missed the FaceApp trend. And as Radio does, we all did it too. Which is fine. But no one has taken it to the next level and done anything with it. Until now.
With Russia allegedly mining the App for info, all this weekend Energy 92.1 in Myrtle Beach is asking the audience to post their aged photos and one will get picked to win....TEN THOUSAND RUBLES!!!!!! Actually that's about $158.
Topical Weekend #2
It's hot as (you would insert a noun or adverb here) in Albany this weekend so Kiss 102.3 is doing a Beat The Heat Weekend and is awarding tickets to the Saratoga County Fair. At the fair there are many opportunities to cool off in the beer garden, with the giant industrial sized fans in the livestock barns and when you get strapped into the Regurgitator and spun at Mach 9.
Great Radio Characters
Characters are great. They help differentiate the station from all the other brands doing the same thing: traffic, gossip and even events calendars.
JACK in Dayton has their Jacktivities list of stuff that is happening in the market. They've chosen to have it done by an intern named Ricky who goes wildly off course at the end of each report. It reminds me of Dready D who was the character that drove SPF 104.3 in Boise, which was their summer umbrella. He was a Jamaican poolboy who the owner's daughter was green carding and at one point, Dready had more followers than the afternoon talent. Here is some Ricky. https://soundcloud.com/cprpromo/jack-fm-dayton-rickys-best-worst-moments
