Things We Don’t Do
- Chase waterfalls
- Put pineapple on my pizza
- Give away a prize that costs less than the gas it is going to require to come and pick it up
- Leave trace evidence: “Fiber’s as good as a fingerprint” – Greg Strassell
- Give away discounts
- And…qualify to qualify
#6 is a great reminder from Alison McDonald with iHeart/Toledo
Over/Under
Most of us have done High/Low. This is a very simple appt. time contest that Pebbles and Boomer do at an appt time every morning. They will lob out something like “Boomer stops for breakfast every day after the show and gets the same meal every time. Is the cost over or under $5?”
Triple Play Holiday
Since cavemen first tried to get through on the studio line with Paul Harvey, “triple play” as a contest methodology has killed. Two powers and then a Gold that, when played, in order, were the cue to call. Done as Menage A Gaga at KLUC in Las Vegas. Everytime the first two play, the phones blow up. After a week or two you follow with the correct third song.
99.1 Hits-FM in St. Johns is doing it at appt times: call in and recall the last three songs that were played to qualify to go and see Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish in Portugal.https://www.991hitsfm.com/triple-play-holiday-taylor-swift-in-lisbon/
Project Prom
WiLD in Tampa was the first station that I saw do something with helping collect prom dresses and get them to young women in the community who might not be able to afford the big ticket item and thus would miss their prom. Catholic Charities in Tampa/St. Pete did the work of funneling the dresses to the right girls. Kiss in Charlotte got their hands on it circa 2000 and turned it into an NTR event that’s done on quite a few stations.
‘DJX in Louisville is back with it for another season. https://www.wdjx.com/event/99-7-djx-nu-yale-cleaners-presents-project-prom-2020/
