“Don’t Wear A Mask”
There was a very very successful voter registration campaign in 2008 based on Hollywood celebs being told to cut a video telling people not to vote.
And it was copied very successfully by a hundred stations.
Not wearing a mask is a LOT different so it would need to be done even more over the top than the celebrities: “Wait, you want me to say ‘Don’t wear a mask”? No way. I won’t do it.” It might be perceived to be way too risky and I get it. Just lobbing it out as an idea starter. Perhaps there’s a different spin to the phrase but it again emphasizes to buck social media messaging, follow guidelines and we can get through this.
“It’s Going To Get Better”
“It Gets Better” was another viral campaign done by businesses (Google, Apple, radio stations, etc) and “fields” like law enforcement to push the message to bullied teens that “It will get better”.
What if you did that with your clients, civic leaders, talent and any artists you can get on board. The message being something like “We’re going to get through this”, “It’s going to get better” or “We’re all in this together.”
Back To School Laptops
Back To School is going to be interesting and no one really knows for sure how it will play out. A very savvy cluster is launching a campaign to raise money to purchase laptops for kids who are going to be stuck doing remote schooling and the family doesn’t have a computer or have too many home-students for the one that they have. This is a brilliant concept and they are correctly going to leave it to the schools to get the laptops to the right homes instead of turning it into a cheesy radio contest. Speaking of which…
The Wheel Of Meat
Wild in San Francisco was the first station to do WOM circa 1994 and the Rick Thomas era. It was an on-air contest that had the hourly caller “spin a wheel” and whatever it landed in like bratwurst, chicken, ground beef, steak, hot dogs, they won courtesy of a grocery client. The key to why it was so successful that they were WAY over the top with having a game show host, goofy 1970’s game show music…basically giving it a vibe. Hot in Knoxville has brought it back. Seriously? Who doesn’t like free food.
